What is the Opportunity?

The Chief Data Office (CDO) is a first line function that provides execution support for critical data governance and data management activities. The CDO guides the evolution of RBC's data strategy and influences strategic investments in data to support business strategy and regulatory compliance.

This director level position is an enterprise role defining and delivering first line governance activities related to data privacy. We are seeking an experienced and specialized Director of Data Privacy to lead our first line governance efforts. This role is critical in ensuring that our data privacy practices adhere to the regulations set forth by the applicable global regulatory bodies. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise data privacy regulations, with a strong background in supporting compliance within them. This position will report to the Enterprise Data Governance Leader within the CDO.

What will you do?

  • Understand data privacy policy and standards to establish and deliver advisory services to Data Management Offices on data retention and destruction initiatives and engagements as needed.

  • Collaborate with first and second line to lead the development, implementation, and oversight of regulatory frameworks that ensure compliance with regulations, bills, acts, and laws.

  • Function as CDO subject matter expert for data privacy to the second line. Review current policies and standards along with synthesis of current and upcoming regulatory landscape, findings, and external industry trends to provide gaps and recommend opportunities for improvement.

  • Participate in the refresh process for internal Privacy related policies and standards.

  • Develop training materials and job aids/playbooks to support first line stakeholders in their efforts to comply with privacy requirements.

  • Define and execute monitoring and reporting on compliance with data privacy requirements at enterprise-level.

  • Define requirements for Chief Data Office approved tools and processes supporting data privacy.

  • Maintain inventory on applicable regulatory citations and dataset types to enable controls in the regulated environment.

  • Provide subject matter content for development and maintenance of a data privacy literacy program.

  • Provide support and preparation for Enterprise Data Governance Leader to chair Enterprise Data Privacy Steering Committee.

What do you need to succeed?

  • 10+ years of data experience in financial services

  • 8 years' experience in data or at least 5 years of experience in a 1st or 2nd line data privacy role.

  • 2-4 years in first- or second-line risk management and/or governance at a financial institution

  • In-depth understanding of global privacy regulations, including Canadian, European, and major U.S. state bills, acts, regulations, and laws.

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders in compliance, legal, IT, and operations to achieve regulatory compliance.

  • Prior experience implementing and supporting enterprise-wide risk programs.

  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory and legislative guidelines.

  • Experience managing projects including planning, implementation, and reporting.

  • Proven leadership skills

  • Ability to work in a demanding environment with competing priorities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable interacting with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience in strategy development preferred.

The good-faith expected salary range for the above position is $160,000 - $250,000 (New Jersey), $130,000 - $210,000 (MN) depending on factors including but not limited to the candidate's experience, skills, registration status; market conditions; and business needs. This salary range does not include other elements of total compensation, including a discretionary bonus and benefits such as a 401(k) program with company-matching contributions; health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance; and paid time-off plan.
