The Gregg Museum of Art & Design inspires creativity, innovation, and the expression of ideas by making its collections and activities freely accessible to the university, the community, and the public. The Gregg acquires and preserves a vast collection of art, craft and design relevant to the university, the community, and the state; encourages and facilitates the use of the collection for teaching, learning, research and enjoyment; creates 6-8 thought-provoking exhibitions each year, which are accompanied by educational publications produced by the museum; and facilitates critical and creative thinking, lifelong learning, and a passion for discovery through an extensive series of artist residencies, workshops, symposia, classes, lectures, student programs, and art activation across campus.
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Gregg Museum of Art & Design offers a Curatorial Assistant (CA) for 30 hours per week over a two-year term with support from the Gregg Museum's Greenberg Fund to uplift Native American art studies, collecting, exhibitions, and educational programming. The CA reports to the Museum Director to develop exhibitions and programs for Spring and Fall 2026, specifically focusing on Black and Indigenous art, culture, heritage, and artists. This role includes reinterpreting the Museum's Native American art collection through regional and global narratives, and assisting the Museum Director on art activations across campus with the Public Art Committee, and additional curatorial responsibilities as needed and outlined below.
Responsibilities include:
- The CA is vital to the success of the Gregg Museum's ambitious and highly regarded exhibitions program and will work closely with the Museum Director on assigned duties encompassing all aspects of project assisting and coordination of exhibition work, including research, interpretation, planning, organization, writing for publications and wall labels, logistics, contracting and defining the artist's scope of work as well as the artist's promotions and inclusion in exhibitions and programming.
- The CA will play a significant role in an upcoming exhibition in 2026 that aims to reimagine and respectfully represent the Native American art collection, featuring regional and national Indigenous artists. The Spring 2026 exhibition will consist of multiple focused shows across the museum spaces and will involve collaboration with NC State's American Indian Council and the Native American Student Association. The Fall 2026 exhibition will involve working closely with the Art Bridges Foundation to host the Crafting Sanctuaries exhibition on Black family life history in the rural South, agricultural communities, and reimagined narratives from local artists and history in the Triangle/Raleigh region.
- The CA will support the Museum Director with other duties as needed related to exhibitions and curation, for example, developing art activations across campus with the Public Art Committee, and supporting the integration of arts & STEM-based research and innovative projects.

- The goal of the CA is to provide an opportunity for building curatorial skills through innovative, community-driven museum practices. The CA will enhance the capacity for exhibitions, programs, and public art across NC State's campus.
