The Assistant Director takes the lead in guiding Jefferson students and scholars, accompanying dependents on immigration, academic, and life issues as they pursue their studies, employment, volunteer opportunities and observational activities for Jefferson's enterprise and hospital affiliates. Communicates regulatory changes to constituents and provides information about international activities. Ensures compliance with all federal immigration requirements.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Counsel and guide F-1 students and J-1 Exchange Visitors through the visa procurement process, entry and status maintenance following NAFSA Ethics Principles and determine the best course of action to achieve desired long-term results and immigration strategies.
  • Accurately interprets and complies with Department of State, Department of Labor and US Customs and Immigration Services regulations; establishes and implements best practices.
  • Acts as a University contact to DHS, USCIS, DOL, SEVP, SSA, PENNDOT and other government agencies
  • Serves as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), responsible for all aspects of SEVIS record management, including but not limited to reviewing and processing initial I-20 and DS-2019, employment requests (OPT, CPT, on-campus, academic training), registration, validation, termination, change of status, and reinstatement
  • Be available to respond to emergencies faced by Jefferson international population of students and scholars
  • Maintain effective electronic communications and notify relevant populations of important news, e.g., policy changes in the United States or emergencies abroad.
  • Create International pre-arrival, on-site orientation and informational brochures and pamphlets as required by the United States Department of State and Department of Homeland Security.
  • Develop and deliver special programs & events including orientation for F-1 students and J-1 Exchange Visitors, periodic training programs for enterprise administrators and staff who onboard J-1 Exchange Visitors, International Education Week and others as needed.
  • Assist the Director in creating policy and procedures for compliance with new regulations and requirements set forth by Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and immigration Services. Recommend and implement changes as needed.
  • Liaise with all Jefferson affiliates regarding Exchange Visitor procedures; handle all J-1 processes for those organizations, including Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, DuPont, Rothman, Wills Eye Institute, Einstein, and others.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):

  • Manage systems and maintain data integrity for SEVIS, Terra Dotta, and other university systems.
  • Manage and support staff including Administrative Coordinator and others as needed.
  • Update web content regularly with self-initiated content.
  • Participate in student affairs groups and special student and scholar programming, including the Jefferson Postdoctoral Association.
  • Continually monitor and implement frequent federal regulation changes and reporting.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

AND
Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years working as a DSO/ARO with international students and exchange visitors; significant study, work or travel abroad.
