POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the VP & Chief Development Officer, the Executive Director, Development, will be the key strategic leader for multiple support functions within the Development Office, specifically overseeing the Operations, Prospect Management, and events teams, among others. The Executive Director, Development will sit on the Development Executive Leadership Team, comprised of the VP & CDO and three other departmental leaders. Together, this group will set department and team strategy ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, monitor progress towards departmental and team goals, and lead and execute projects in support of BMCHS philanthropy, working collaboratively to identify and address system-wide opportunities and challenges. The Executive Director, Development will be responsible for ensuring that the work of the support service structure is in alignment with overarching strategic goals and priorities of the department and supports the philanthropic goals of our frontline teams. This position, in conjunction with the other Executive Leadership team members, will also oversee the implementation and roll out of philanthropic practices at the two newest hospitals within the BMCHS System, GSMC/SEMC.

The Executive Director, Development is accountable for the development, implementation, and ongoing success of a highly functional cross-cutting support service model and overall administration of the Development Office, identifying opportunities for transformation and innovation to improve our outcomes and efficiencies across the department. They will lead annual goal setting including the creation of dashboards to track performance and provide project management oversight of key initiatives that will drive performance. This role is responsible for the management and functionality of the database (data integrity & security) and gift processing standards, in addition to providing timely and insightful analysis and interpretation of fundraising data.

This position requires a combination of proactive leadership, strategic planning, financial acumen, philanthropic experience, and operational expertise.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic Development expert with substantial experience in a matrixed organizational structure who can effectively collaborate across various functions and manage competing priorities. A demonstrated commitment to social justice and equality, a proven dedication to fostering inclusion and continuous learning, and a history of engagement within large social impact or healthcare organizations is essential.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Strategy


  • Collaborate with department, hospital and system leadership, senior clinical and administrative staff, including Development colleagues, to establish strategic priorities and ensure operational excellence for the BMCHS Development portfolio.

  • Set goals, strategies, and priorities for their team in support of the entire Development enterprise, including the strategic use of staff resources and development of best practices.

  • Develop, implement, and ensure the success of strategies and processes that drive effective communication among Development staff, maintain momentum across all initiatives, and create opportunities to streamline operations and optimize resources.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging opportunities and implement changes, while maintaining consistency with best practices, Development goals and organizational culture.

  • Build strategic collaboration tools and processes necessary to optimize fundraising practices internally and externally.

  • Participate in strategic planning with the VP & CDO and other executive leadership team members. With input from other senior leaders, own and manage the implementation of the strategy. Ensure adherence to budget, timely attainment of milestones, and production of work aligned with strategic goals.


Operational and Financial Expertise


  • Build and maintain key relationships with high-level stakeholders across the organization to drive institutional change and understanding around philanthropic processes and procedures at the highest level of the organization.

  • Provide guidance to CDO, frontline fundraisers, and internal partners on regulatory and legal compliance, gift acceptance policies, and accounting requirements for contributions to the Institution.

  • Serve as operational lead for major projects that support the implementation of BMCHS' strategic plan.

  • Drive hospital and department financial performance by analyzing philanthropic, operational, and financial data to support department and institutional goal setting and decision making.

  • Oversee creation of reports for leadership (C-suite, board members, department) that provide relevant, accurate, and timely information aligned with business needs; leads the implementation and design of data analytics to make best-practice metric-based decisions that ensure alignment with, and attainment of, strategic goals.

  • Develop a project management structure & refinement of systems and processes; recommend and implement operational solutions to support Development across all technological platforms currently in use, including but not limited to, Raiser's EdgeNXT (RENXT), Givezy, GiveSmart, Fundraise Up, and Infor.

  • Oversee department administration including team education & training, process development, HR functions, and general office management.


Leadership


  • Directly supervise a team of 20+: advance strengths and fundraising best practices, identify training and career growth opportunities for staff members, and oversee the entire employee management structure of the team.

  • Create a culture of performance and accountability in the department; translate over-arching goals into specific objectives and hold people accountable for results; stay focused on the most important metrics that drive the business.

  • Demonstrate a track record of building and leading high-performance and highly collaborative teams. Actively involved in sourcing, selecting, developing, and retaining high-performance talent.

  • Create a collaborative and aligned fundraising model to maximize revenue and resources between multiple teams and departments ensuring optimized workflows and staff engagement.

  • Lead and support collaborative partnerships among teams to execute coordinated fundraising activities and strategies in conjunction with the Development Executive Leadership team.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify and address challenges and opportunities across the department, providing thought leadership beyond immediate area of responsibility as appropriate.

  • Serve as Development's point of contact with Legal & Finance to ensure compliance with all laws and BMC policies.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or as needed.

  • Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.

  • Utilize hospital's cultural beliefs as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.

  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

EXPERIENCE:


  • A minimum of 15 years of operations and development experience in sizable, intricate organizations, with at least 10 years in a leadership role driving operations and performance outcomes required.

  • Substantial experience in a matrixed organizational structure, effective cross-functional team collaboration, and adept management of competing priorities.

  • A proven track record of achieving or surpassing goals and developing strategy rooted in best practices in a medium to large, fast-paced nonprofit environment with a diverse revenue stream.

  • Experience managing data and converting it into actionable information.

  • Experience leading organizational change with diverse constituencies and capacity building at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience leveraging technology and information to creatively identify prospects, retain and upgrade donors, steward gifts, and inform future investments in program growth.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):


  • A keen understanding of the intricacies and opportunities within the healthcare domain is vital.

  • Strategic leadership that can compellingly innovate fundraising processes, as well as envision new revenue-generating opportunities.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills are necessary along with the ability to be highly organized, creative, energetic, and assertive and exhibit the independent judgment and personal integrity necessary to carry out a senior management role in fundraising.

  • A teamwork-oriented approach to colleagues and proven ability to manage people in a positive and constructive environment are essential.

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting budgeting, principles and applications.

  • Ability to manage through others to ensure adherence to the highest quality standards, with the ability to collaborate and drive for results.
