Overview Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) is the largest blood-focused research institute in the United States. With over 30 basic, translational, and clinical researchers, the institute is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and developing innovative therapies related to blood and blood disorders. The institute's research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including transfusion medicine, cellular therapy, thrombosis/hemostasis, immunology, and hematologic malignancies. As a vital part of Versiti, a non-profit organization with a blood bank at its core, the VBRI strives to improve lives through innovative research and the development of novel diagnostics and treatments. VBRI is part of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus, a rapidly growing clinical-translational research hub. VBRI's proximity to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Childrens' Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital facilitates seamless interdisciplinary collaborations. A range of exemplary core facilities support highly competitive research. In the summer of 2024, construction of a new research building will start, doubling existing VBRI research space to enable the recruitment of 10-15 new faculty. With its renowned researchers, strategic expansion plans and location in a highly collaborative environment, the VBRI is poised to maintain and expand its position as one of the leading hematology institutes in the world. Position Summary A postdoctoral position is available at NIH-funded lab to study the role of HEMOLYSIS in promoting organ damage in SICKLE CELL DISEASE. The lab is interested in studying the role of hemolysis induced heme-iron -hemoglobin accumulation and associated liver-kidney and splenic injury in Sickle Cell Disease. Previous experience in mice surgery or intravital microscopy, microfluidic platforms, flow cytometry, western blot analysis and a strong background in hemoglobin-heme-iron clearance, liver biology, and sterile inflammation, receptor-ligand interaction and endocytosis is highly preferred. Our labs are located in the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) of the Blood Center of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (https://versiti.org/versiti-blood-research-institute). VBRI is a leader in the field of thrombosis, hemostasis, benign/malignant hematology and genetic disorders like Sickle Cell Disease, VWF disease and hemophilia. VBRI's close association with the Versiti Medical Sciences Institute, the Versiti blood center of Wisconsin, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Adult as well as Pediatric Sickle Cell Clinic at the Froedtert hospital and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin ensures strong translational training and accessibility to invaluable resources such as patient tissue/blood samples. VBRI has a strong commitment towards career development of young investigators in the field of basic and translational hematology. Postdoc candidates will also have the opportunity to learn basic and clinical hematology, innate immunity, thrombosis, platelet biology and pulmonary vascular biology. VBRI and the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center are located in Wauwatosa, which is a peaceful and beautiful suburb of Milwaukee, the second largest city in Mid-West US with affordable living cost. Milwaukee, situated on the shore of beautiful lake Michigan enjoys all four seasons and provides all the charms of a big city. In addition, the close proximity to Chicago city (70 miles) ensures accessibility to all the attractions in the city of Chicago. Travel to and from Milwaukee is convenient through either Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport or Ohare Chicago International Airport. Ohare Chicago is only 63 miles from Milwaukee and easily accessible via car, bus or train provides a convenient means of international air travel with direct flights to most destinations in the world. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES * Works with Principal Investigator to develop a research project. * Executes laboratory experiments specific to aims of research. * Troubleshoots assays and customizes experimental tools to answer research questions. * Coordinates external and internal resources necessary for completion of research plan. * Provides direction to Technologists and Trainees. * Generates clear and complete records of experimental work. * Communicates results of research at meetings. * Participates in publication and presentation of research.
