The Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis

Job Description

The Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor. This position will teach in our first-year experience courses, Cultural Traditions I and II. The Cultural Traditions curriculum centers on engaging students with global texts from the ancient world through the modern day; as the Honors First Year Experience course, it provides an essential foundation for Honors learning, community-building, and professional development.

In addition, the ability to teach courses in African American Studies is highly desirable and will be positively considered. Applications from the humanities or social sciences are preferred.

This position includes, as do all honors appointments, a significant service component focused on student support. Honors faculty teach three courses each semester in contrast with the standard four-course workload for UMSL non-tenure track faculty to facilitate these additional duties.

Key service responsibilities for this position include:
* Academic advising.
* Participation in new student recruitment efforts.
* Engagement in Honors College community events.
* Coordinating and serving as a mentor in the St. Louis Scholars and Opportunity Scholars programs. These programs offer scholarships and support to first-generation students and those from the greater St. Louis area.

The initial appointment is for one academic year, with the potential for renewal and opportunities for promotion to Associate and Full Teaching Professor (non-tenure track). Multi-year appointments may be available as the faculty member advances in rank.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree by the time of appointment and three years of teaching experience
- Experience teaching small, discussion-based seminars for undergraduates

Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal degree by the time of appointment
- Ability to teach courses in African American Studies.
- Demonstrated ability to teach introductory courses.
- Experience teaching in an honors program
- Evidence of innovative pedagogy, such as interdisciplinary courses, service learning or community engagement.
- Student advising, mentoring, and program development experience.
- Experience supporting the success of students from a variety of backgrounds.
