Role with the Company:
The Tax Manager will provide support to the Accounting Department of the company and will own and manage the tax function, building the tax department developing the current Tax Accountant who does state and local taxes (SALT). Oversee and manage sales and use tax for all states the company operates in, and manage excise tax work done by external CPA firm (125-175 sales & use and excise tax returns). Reports to the Controller.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of the tax accounting function
  • Help to develop and implement tax strategies to ensure compliance with tax regulations
  • Review and analyze financial data to prepare and file tax returns accurately and timely
  • Provide guidance and support to team members on tax-related matters
  • Collaborate with the Controller to address tax issues and optimize tax planning strategies
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations to ensure adherence to compliance requirements
  • Conduct tax research and analysis to identify opportunities for tax savings and risk mitigation
  • Prepare and present reports on tax-related activities and findings to senior management
  • Maintain accurate and organized tax records and documentation for audits and reviews
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts related to fuel/sales taxes
  • Prepare Resale & Exemption Certificates; Gasoline Blendstock Certificates; Multi-jurisdictional Sales and Certificates for Vendors
  • Goal to bring excise tax in house, so Tax Manager will need to create a structure and efficiencies to do that
  • Find tax advantages/tax savings and help with journal entries and account reconciliations at month end close

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, Master's a huge plus; CPA a plus but not required
  • 5+ years' state & local taxes (SALT) and sales & use tax experience in multiple states; excise tax experience a plus
  • Knowledge of federal taxes to manage external CPA firm who does their federal returns
  • Experience overseeing an organization's tax documentation
  • Involvement in putting tax structure in place and drive to do it with a plan to get it done
  • Experience managing small teams and managing the tax process to ensure all is done timely
  • Ability to dig in and find tax advantages/tax savings
  • Experience with month end close journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Process improvement experience to support company through rapid growth
  • NetSuite ERP experience strongly preferred; strong Excel skills including pivot tables and vlookups
  • Self-starter, self-motivated, driven to improve tax function
  • Not easily offended by colorful language in the racing industry
