SUMMARY:Coordinates assigns and leads the activities of Central Sterile Supply Processing personnel.
Maintain clinical standards for the sterilization proper processing and delivery of instruments and equipment in accordance with ANSI (American National Standards Institute) AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Equipment) and IAHCSMM (International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management) standards and departmental Policy and Procedure. Regularly performs duties and responsibilities of Central Sterile Supply Processing Technician.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with organization and coordination of the work of the Sterile Supply & Processing staff to ensure that departmental objectives are accomplished according to established work standards. Serves as technical resource to staff.

Assists with selection of new staff.

Assists with development and coordination of and conducts orientation of new staff.

Instructs staff in proper work methods techniques use and care of equipment safe working practices and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific requirements for instrumentation and supplies when coordinating case carts for surgery.

Monitors staff performance of work methods and processes and provides basic reinforcement or coaching as needed. Reports areas of concern to Surgical Materials Coordinator.

Provides Surgical Materials Coordinator with routine performance feedback on staff and provides input for performance evaluations.

Assists with identification of staff learning needs assists with development of and participates in required education programs.

Assists with provision of adequate and efficient utilization of department personnel equipment and facilities.

Assists with development and maintenance of week schedule.

Adjusts staff assignments for unscheduled staff absences or special needs.

Assists with communication of relevant information to staff on a timely basis and in an appropriate manner including participation in staff meetings.

Leads and motivates employees to peak team performance by serving as a role model and resource.

Ensures that adequate supplies and instruments are available for each surgical case.

Assists with establishment of a preventive and corrective maintenance program for all mobile medical equipment and sterilizing equipment in conjunction with the Surgical Materials Coordinator and the Biomedical Engineering Department.

Reports to Surgical Materials Coordinator on daily activities progress and problems. Collects unit quality data to identify deviations from standards.

Reports all services and facilities that require corrections to the appropriate person. Consults with Surgical Materials Coordinator regarding unusual and difficult technical or personnel problems.

Provides expertise in aseptic technique disposition of contaminated material and containment of the infectious process.

Maintains high standards of instrumentation processing in accordance with industry standards.

Provides input into development and revision of SSPD policies and procedures.

Decontamination Process:

Utilizes a variety of equipment in accordance with policy and procedure to perform decontamination process including washers conveyor dumb waiter heat sealer and drying cabinets.

Demonstrates ability to safely utilize appropriate detergents and disinfectants.

Demonstrates equipment processing procedures for:

- patient care equipment

- electronic equipment

- crash carts

- respiratory equipment

- CPR mannequins

- infant car seats

Processes surgical instrumentation including manual and mechanical cleaning instrument lubrication and inspection.

Cleans disinfects leak-tests and assembles flexible endoscopes.

Maintains cleanliness and order of work areas.

Assembly and Packaging of Instruments

Sorts and assembles instrument sets using set cards and count sheets.

Packages and labels instruments utilizing appropriate materials and technique.

Assembles respiratory therapy equipment.

Sterilization Process:

Performs monitoring of sterilization process including mechanical chemical and biological monitors.

Operates a variety of sterilization equipment in accordance with department policy and procedures:

- steam sterilizers

- ETO sterilizers

- aeration cabinets

Labels and records items sterilized and records monitoring results.

Performs chemical disinfection of appropriate supplies including mixing solutions rinsing and aerating items and documentation.

Distribution of Sterile Supplies & Equipment:

Prepares total case carts for surgical procedures:

- maintains and uses surgeons* preference cards

- assembles case carts accurately and in a timely manner

- identifies and communicates unresolved problems

- responds rapidly and effectively to emergency or added cases or immediate needs of the surgical team.

Distributes supplies to hospital departments and remote offices via:

- Dumb waiter

- Conveyor baskets

- Pneumatic tube

- Closed cart delivery

- Hospital courier

Other Responsibilities:

Orders and restocks inventory and maintains inventory cards.

Inspects and restocks crash carts and emergency supply baskets.

Performs data entry for Surgical Services when assigned.

Washes carts and carriages.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma (or equivalent). Three years Central Sterile Supply Processing experience with demonstrated leadership skills. IAHCSMM certification or by 12 months of hire date.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS;

Must be able to sit stand squat/kneel for 1-3 hours per day walk 3-7 hours per day lift over 50lbs with good mechanics twist/bend infrequently. Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work that deviates from neutralposition andbe able to perform fine motor skills. Must have accurate near and far vision 20/20 depth perception and discriminate among colors. Must be able to hear whispers at 20 feet.
