DESCRIPTION

The City of Corona has an exciting opportunity to join our Utilities Department as a Lead Water Operator. There are currently two (2) vacancies for Lead Water Operator. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies as they occur.

Knowledge & Education

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework in water science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of operational principles, practices, methods, functions, and servicing requirements of the equipment of a potable water treatment plant and distribution facilities.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and organizational policies and procedures regarding the production, treatment, storage, and transmission of potable water, including the Safe Drinking Act and relevant EPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to operate and maintain all aspects of the City's water distribution system, water treatment system, and related facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to operate treatment and blending facilities, monitor trends, and pull water samples.
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of pumping, treatment, control, and transmission equipment, including digital control (SCADA) equipment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of assigned staff.

Experience

  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience working in water distribution, potable water production, water treatment, storage, transmission, or a related field.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a valid Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Grade T3 Water Treatment Operator Certificate.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within 12 months of appointment, a valid Grade D4 Water Distribution Operator Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within 12 months of appointment, a valid Grade T4 Water Treatment Operator Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.

The deadline for first review of application is Monday, March 24, 2025, at 5:00PM. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as the recruitment may close at any time without notice after the first review period.

Candidates that successfully pass the screening process and are deemed to possess the most desirable qualifications will be invited to an in-person oral interview. Tentative in-person interviews are scheduled for April 2, 2025. The top scoring candidates from the oral interview will be placed on an eligibility list from which the department may hire. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill the current and/or additional vacancies throughout the City.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening).

The Organization

The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. Policymaking and legislative authority is vested in the City Council, consisting of a Mayor and four Council Members. Members of the City Council are elected by District to a four-year term. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.

The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.

The City's total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2025 is $ 399.1 million with a General Fund operating budget of $ 209.6 million. Corona enjoys a workforce of 922 dedicated employees who provide high quality services to its residents and visitors each day.
