Position Overview:

Production Management & Operations ("PMO") works alongside internal stakeholders and with PBS member stations and producers to facilitate the creation of multiplatform content. The group operates within two prime areas of focus:

Production Operations: It functions as a linchpin with broad reach across business units, including GA and KIDS Programming, Digital Studios, Learning Media, Digital, Marketing, Communications, Distribution, Business Affairs & Legal, and Finance. Externally, it interfaces with key funding partner organizations to include: the PBS Foundation, producers, and PBS member stations.

Production Management: It partners with in-house content teams, PBS stations, and the domestic and international production community. In this regard the group oversees production logistics and PBS's financial investments for all content in active negotiation, development, production, delivery, and project reconciliation.

The Intern is required to perform 360-degree effective communication and relationship building; working within the department to assist with the flow of information to all partners while also providing support for the assigned Dir, Production Management & Operations (as "Manager"). The Director is a self-starter with the ability to prioritize multiple concurrent assignments in a dynamic environment, while consulting and aligning efforts with management.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Systems/Processes/Special Assignments

  • Works on specialty assignments, including but not limited to the "reboot" of the PBS online Producer's Handbook. The intern will be a key partner in this initiative.

  • Partners on Media Supply Chain workflow support for PMO.

Production Operations

  • Assists to ensure producer proposals are in-line with expectations; that they represent value and meet internal ambitions.

  • Assist work across internal business units to determine work scope on a project-by-project basis.

  • In partnership with assigned Manager, helps move assigned projects through cross-department meetings and systems, and onwards towards contracting. Shadows consultation work with internal constituents to help tailor project requirements.

Contracting

  • Assists with the analysis of producer assumptions; production budgets; funding plans; staffing and production schedules; production cash flows.

  • Supports the creation of payment schedules and content deliverable documents as they relate to agreed editorial proposals.

  • Assists to identify and then tracks and communicates funder sources.

  • Helps prepare and to finalize negotiated and internally approved production exhibits for contracts.

  • Assists with new vendor initiation.

Production

  • In collaboration with Programming, helps to organize project "kick-off" and "check-in" meetings with internal and external production partners.

  • Works with PMO Assistant Directors to manage funder financial revenue data, generating reports, and coordinating funder requirements between producers and to multiple PBS departments. Records in PBS systems.

  • As assigned, verifies cross-department milestone completion with teams throughout PBS.

Skills Intern Will Acquire

  • Learning basic production manager skills (budget review, exhibit preparation, cost report review, payment processing).

  • Gain knowledge of PBS and its operational workflows.

  • Gain knowledge of the producer community and its work.

  • Exposure to business operations and deal making.

Requirements for success:

  • Some exposure to content production logistics; production budgets and schedules.

  • BS/BA in Film/TV/Digital Production - or - equivalent education exposure and experience.

  • Microsoft 365 with Excel experience.

  • Experience with data management, analysis, and reporting. Data visualization experience a plus.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Team player. Problem solver.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Very important.

  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

Additional Information:

Time Commitment: May 27, 2025 - August 15, 2025

Compensation: Undergraduate students receive $15/hour, graduate students receive $17/hour
