Position Summary |
The Director of the First Year Experience reports to the Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs and is primarily responsible for the oversight and implementation of the First Year Seminar of the general education core curriculum. The First-Year Seminar will address topics that are important to a "first year experience," including academic advising, effective use of college resources, and an appreciation of the rhythms of the academic year to help facilitate the first-year college student's transition.
The Director also supports the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (
QEP) by coordinating the
IGNITE program and Peer Advising Leaders (
PALS) student workers. The
IGNITE program is intended to help students build skills and academic confidence while creating meaningful connections to the community on and off campus.
IGNITE engages incoming first year students in a structured, peer-led, cohort experience in which Peer Advising Leaders (PALs) facilitate structured conversations topics such as interpersonal skill development, growth mindset, intercultural dialogue, and introductory career education.
This position works closely with campus partners in Student Affairs. |

Required Education/Experience/Skills |
- A Master's degree from an accredited college or university
- At least 5 years of student-focused progressive leadership and management in higher education.
- Superior strategic planning skills and proven ability to implement and evaluate programs
- Ability to manage concurrent projects both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Work with and relate to a culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff
- Demonstrated ability to build positive work teams while working in a fast-paced, student-centered environment
- Significant attention to detail and solid written and oral communication skills to engage a variety of audiences, including students, parents, faculty, staff and senior university leaders

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills |
- Ph.D. or terminal degree in a core curriculum or general education discipline from an accredited college or university
- College-level teaching experience.
- Experience designing, implementing and assessing higher education curriculum
- Experience with budget development and resource allocation
- Proven experience in creating, promoting and launching campus-wide activities for students
- Experience gaining buy-in from faculty for campus-wide initiatives
- Evidence of strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to mentor students and manage faculty.
- Familiarity with core curriculum or general education requirements.
