Job Purpose

The Advanced Engineer, Electromagnetic Design will be working as part of Hyliion's KARNO technology team located in Milford, Ohio, towards improving electric machine performance, building and testing prototypes, and designing & optimizing the overall electric powertrain. This position will report to the Senior Manager, Electrical & Controls Principal.

Duties and Responsibilities



  • Electric machine analysis, design and system optimization including balancing design tradeoffs for performance, power density, cost, and efficiency.
  • Develop analytical models for predicting the performance and efficiency of electric machines used for power generation.
  • Develop 2D/3D FEA simulation models for characterizing and optimizing electromagnetic performance.
  • Electric machine design iteration between electromagnetic design and manufacturing including magnetic material selection, electrical insulation, interconnections, etc.
  • Build and test machine prototypes in a lab environment.
  • Coordinate with component and assembly suppliers.
  • Assist with the certification process.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned, needed, or required for the business.

Qualifications include:



  • Education, Experience and Certifications

    • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or similar field required
    • Ph.D. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or a similar field with a focus in Electric Machines preferred
    • At least 5 years of experience in electric machines analysis, design, and prototyping
    • Strong fundamentals in Electromagnetics design of permanent magnet machines
    • Experience with full cycle product development from initial concept to production is preferred


  • Skills and Abilities

    • Proficiency with EMAG FEA software packages such as Ansys Maxwell, JMAG, COMSOL, FLUX, or similar.
    • Experience with analytical modeling and design of electric machines.
    • Knowledge with manufacturing processes for electric machine fabrication (winding, welding, etc.).
    • Experience in electric machine thermal modeling and efficiency characterization.
    • Proficiency in hands-on mechanical integration, troubleshooting, rapid prototyping and validation testing.
    • Familiarity with mechanical CAD design including (GD&T) and tolerance stack-up analyses experience is a plus.
    • Familiarity with drive system integration and modeling/simulation in Simulink is a plus.
    • Experience with programming in MATLAB or Python is a plus.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment.





Role Classification and Working Conditions

This is a salaried, exempt-level position. This position typically works in an office environment; and given the nature of our business is also exposed to operations/warehouses/production environments.
