Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Unit Administrator/Specialist Casual for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This role will help with various JC NERR education/outreach projects and programs. This includes, but is not limited to, the following: spring field work related to the JC NERR Community Science Eel Monitoring Program (such as routine scheduled sampling, counting and recording and organizing eel data, and maintaining sampling equipment), co-development and implementation of the JC NERR 6-week summer youth programs (including assistance with preparation of instructional materials) and assist with both on and off-site public education and outreach efforts including the JC NERR interpretive exhibit (some of which may occur on nights or weekends).

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Assists with spring field work related to the JC NERR's community science glass eel monitoring program such as routine scheduled sampling, counting and recording and organizing glass eel data, and maintaining sampling equipment.
  • Leads or assists with education and public outreach programs which include on and off site school field trips, events and interpretive exhibit tours.
  • Co-development and implementation of the JC NERR 6-week "Creature Feature" programs including assistance with preparation of instructional materials for the six-week summer "Creature Feature" programs for children ages 6-13, class instruction on various marine and estuarine species, development of the knowledge content, activities, and lesson plans for each class, and management of weekly registrations.
  • Assists with other education and outreach initiatives as needed, including website development, social media posts, blog & newsletter articles, gathering raw photo & video content, development of marketing and advertisement materials, etc.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Up to two years of relevant experience in an administrative function.

Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with public outreach and education with various audiences and age groups; and with program and curriculum development and preparation of class lesson plans.
  • Familiarity with marine and coastal science concepts and current issues.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work in a small team setting and collaborative groups.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word processing, Excel, PowerPoint, email and web-based applications.
