Location

The Newbury Boston at One Newbury Street, located in the premier shopping and dining neighborhood of Boston's Back Bay is an iconic property originally opened in 1927 as one of the first Ritz-Carlton hotels in the U.S. and most recently was the Taj Boston. The building was recently transformed into a 286-room luxury hotel with 16,000-sq-ft of stunning event spaces, signature dining experiences and a reimagined front entrance on Newbury Street.



Overview

The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for repairs and maintenance of all hotel equipment and systems as directed by the needs of the guests and employees. The Maintenance Engineer is to provide the highest quality service working in an efficient and thoughtful manner. At all times the highest level of service standards is to be adhered to.



Responsibilities

Fundamental Requirements:

    Employees must, at all times, be attentive, friendly, helpful, and courteous to all guests, managers, and fellow employees.
  • Abide by The Newbury Boston Luxury Standards
  • Must fully comply and abide by the Highgate Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform the Daily Shift Engineer's check list daily and report any abnormalities
  • Respond to Guest and Emergency calls within 10 minutes
  • Complete work requests and shift assignments in a timely manner
  • Perform Fireplace Butler duties - lighting and extinguishing fires in a safe manner
  • Perform Snow related duties (shoveling, use of Bobcat and snowblowers) as needed and directed
  • Removal and/or replacement of damaged furniture items in both Guest rooms and Public areas
  • Learn, understand and participate in departmental problem solving teams and discussions
  • Maintain safe conditions and procedures in all work areas and when interacting with other Associates.
  • Check working condition of equipment...resolve issues when possible, communicate larger issues to Director of Engineering for further follow up
  • Report any/all safety hazards to Director of Engineering
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by Director of Engineering
  • Assist other departments and Associates as required...perform lateral service when needed
  • Troubleshoot and repair most mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC related systems
  • Think clearly in Emergency situations
  • Interact positively with Guests and Employees
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Seek to understand the guest and internal customer and meet the needs of both the customer and the company.

Safety & Sanitation

At all times safety and health haards should be foremost in the minds of all employees. All employees should acquaint themselves with OSHA Standards regarding proper use, disposal and storage of chemicals, must practice common sense and not expose themselves to any work procedures which are not within the bounds of good safe practice.



Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • At least 2 years of progressive experience in a hotel or a related building environment
  • Building engineering/maintenance experience
  • Ability to access high areas using a ladder
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC experience
  • Vocational/technical training or apprentiship

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of standing, walking, climbing stairs, crouching/kneeling, bending and twisting
  • Carrying/lifting up to 50lbs
  • Repetitive motion
  • Talking/communicating/listening

General Requirements:

  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and written
  • Must be effective at listening to, understanding and claryfing in order to resolve situations
  • Must be able to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines and/or priorities
  • Approach all encounters with guests and employees in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service-oriented manner.
  • Attend all department and/or hotel trainings
  • Is willing and able to step outside of normal responsibilities to assist others
