Who we are looking for:

ASCO is in search of a high-performing and experienced Benefits Manager to play a key role in leading our comprehensive employee benefits programs and processes. In this role you will administer existing programs and design and develop new offerings to attract and retain talent, while ensuring exceptional customer service to employees and other stakeholders. The successful hire will ensure that employee benefits inquiries and issues are handled promptly and serve as the primary point of contact for complex benefits inquiries and situations.

This position is hybrid with a primary location in Alexandria, VA. We anticipate the hire to be onsite approximately 2 days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute benefits programs which attract and retain talent as envisaged by ASCO's Strategic Plan and goals of the department.
  • Direct employee benefits programs including medical, prescription drug, vision, and dental insurance plans, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, disability plans, 401(k) Retirement Plan, 457(b) Plan, Employee Assistance Program, and employee discount insurance plans.
  • Ensure compliance with governmental regulations related to benefit programs and labor law, including ERISA, FMLA, and HIPAA, including required testing and audits.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for employees regarding complex benefits, leave, and accommodation related questions, concerns, and issues. Provide clear, accurate, and timely information to employees about their benefits options.
  • Monitor administrative costs of benefits programs and recommend cost containment strategies, including alternative methods for administration and funding.
  • Survey and analyze employee benefits needs, complete options and best practice research for strategic decision-making, and present cost-effective recommendations which respond to identified needs and/or address fiscal guidelines.
  • Manage relationships with external administrators to monitor and evaluate vendor performance and address any service issues.
  • Manage the benefits obligations related to payroll, ensuring proper data and documentation of integrations and feeds to vendors/related systems such as termination changes, disability, accident and death claims, rollovers, distribution loans, hardships, audits, and compliance testing.
  • Conduct benefits education and training sessions. Plan and execute benefit fairs and employee engagement events in person and virtual.
  • Build strategy and execute creative communication that inspires employees to attend to their own health and welfare and that of their families.
  • Manage annual open enrollment processes and communicate changes to employees.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to members of the Benefits and Operations team.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in human resource management, business administration, or another related field
  • 6+ years of in-depth experience with benefits management and administration
  • 3+ years supervisory experience
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Demonstrated customer service experience, including effective communication with employees at all levels
  • Thorough experience with HRIS, payroll functions that involve multistate and Canadian benefits, FMLA, and benefits software/integrations

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in human resource management, business administration, or another related field
  • Professional HR certification such as PHR/SHRM-CP, CEBS, or GBA
  • Affiliation with human resource programs and HR organizations.

  • Strong understanding of what constitutes protected health information (PHI) and how to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with ability to understand and anticipate the needs of employees and provide effective solutions
  • Business acumen within a corporate, professional association or non-profit organization
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment regulations
  • HR expertise in benefits and project management
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in working with diverse, dispersed, and virtual populations
  • Effective communication skills, including written, with ability to communicate complex information clearly and effectively with differing work and communication styles
  • Strong consultation and coaching skills, including advocacy and engaging clients in solution implementation and change processes
  • Proven ability to maintain high level of confidentiality and handling of sensitive information
