The UC Irvine School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences is the first public pharmacy school in the Los Angeles-Orange County region.Its faculty and programs span a continuum from discovery, development, and delivery of new drugs, devices, and diagnostics all the way to optimizing medication therapy in patients and patient populations. Your Role on the Team

Under general direction from the Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Assistant Dean for Business and Operations serves as the chief operating officer and chief financial officer for the School, and in partnership with the Dean, designs, develops, and implements programs and new initiatives. Responsibilities include institutional planning, budget development, financial management, research administration, academic and nonacademic human resources, student affairs, academic assessment and accreditation, oversight of facilities and capital projects, space planning, technology services, and information systems management. The Assistant Dean works with the Dean in defining and prioritizing specific administrative support needs related to the school's mission, develops strategies to accomplish these needs, plans, initiates, and executes the activity necessary to fulfill these needs. Provides leadership and manages or oversees school staff.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning.
  • Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects.
  • Experience effectively developing and managing budgets and interpreting and summarizing FTE, revenue and productivity data. Superior analytical skills to conduct planning for all operational, resource and program needs.
  • Skills to determine needs, analyze and explore options, and develop creative, flexible, sound plans.
  • Leadership skills as evidenced by one who possesses broad vision of the future of the organization; assertiveness in the presentation and selling of ideas; and sensitivity to the values and expectations of all constituents, including University senior management, faculty, students, employees, donors, community, etc.
  • Ability to apply logic and good judgment in decision making.
  • Demonstrated success of the principles and practices of effective leadership and management to hire and supervise key managers and staff. A proven record of recruiting a talented and diverse staff.
  • Evidence to establish priorities and allocate resources among those priorities to achieve results.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, to engender cooperation and collaboration while making tough decisions and acting on them as appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with a variety of people at all organizational levels within and outside the School and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Ability to develop long-range plans that include financial commitments for capital expansion projects, facilities renovation and capital equipment purchases for instructional, research and administrative facilities.
  • Strong management, organizational and leadership skills in order to implement plans that meet programmatic needs, through the supervision and maximization of a varied and diverse workforce.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and success in both oral and written communication necessary to communicate complex concepts and procedures to a broad array of constituents.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant job experience
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a management role

Preferred:

  • Experience in complex, decentralized organizations, such as an academic medical center, medical school or major research university. Demonstrated experience with financial management including budget and report preparation, analysis and forecasting across multiple funding sources from affiliation agreements, federal, state general and contract funds, grants, gifts, endowments, education and professional fee revenue.
  • Working knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the UC system, and in particular, the University of California, Irvine.
  • Management experience in higher education or health sciences
  • Experience working as an Assistant Dean, Department Administrator, or Divisional Administrator
