JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State is looking for the next Director of the Institute for Computational and Data Science (ICDS).

As one of Penn State's interdisciplinary research institutes housed within the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research (OSVPR), ICDS supports a broad swath of the research portfolio-exploring the origins of far-away galaxies to materials for next-generation energy production; from ways to overcome societal discord to environmental challenges. The Director will build on a legacy of visionary excellence and guide Penn State's future investments in computational and data sciences research, AI, quantum computing, and other disciplines to reach the next level.

The Director reports to the Senior Vice President for Research, who oversees university-wide research activity. The role of the Director will be to:

  • provide vision and university-wide leadership to advance excellence in research computing and data sciences
  • build collaborations among the core colleges by inspiring members and developing incentives for faculty participation in innovative, high-impact interdisciplinary research
  • facilitate an atmosphere of excellence drawing on diverse expertise and perspectives
  • identify new and unique funding opportunities and facilitate the development of large interdisciplinary research programs
  • enhance research and professional development through seminars, workshops, and symposia
  • serve as liaison between the University's research computing initiatives and state, national, and international computational organizations
  • set strategy for the institute's core facilities to deliver high-performance computing (HPC) and computational resources
  • ensure operational excellence and cost efficiency of operations for all aspects of the institute.

The Director is supported by a strong Executive Team of five senior staff members, who meet regularly to steer operations and develop strategies for implementing the vision of the institute, with valuable input from several faculty advisory boards.

With an annual budget of over $10 million, a large portfolio of co-funded and affiliate faculty, about 45 dedicated staff, and advanced cyber-infrastructure core facilities, ICDS works with researchers from nearly all of Penn State's academic colleges and campuses to facilitate new multidisciplinary collaborations, fund new areas of research, overcome computational and data science challenges, and build a diverse community of engaged scholars. ICDS continuously seeks to equip researchers with the resources, latest tools, and access to advanced technical and software engineering consulting, to further their science.

ICDS oversees a growing number of centers and initiatives (ICDS at Penn State) that align with the interdisciplinary mission of the institute, each strengthening the university research profile in specific domains or thematic areas. A unique initiative is the Research Innovations with Scientists and Engineers (RISE) core facility. The RISE team of highly skilled and experienced computational scientists help faculty harness the power of HPC for their research. In addition, ICDS operates a world-class HPC system, the ROAR supercomputer. The ROAR core facility encompasses several compute clusters managed by a dedicated staff and provides essential HPC resources to the researcher community for today's computational and data-intensive needs. With just over 40,000 CPU cores, over 250 GPUs, petabytes of storage, and a dynamic collection of advanced software, this resource supports advanced simulation and statistical modeling, data analysis, data mining, machine learning, among others.

Penn State is the land grant, sea grant, and space grant university for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. With more $1.337 billion in R&D expenditures in FY24, Penn State boasts a deep culture of interdisciplinary research and a strong commitment to using that research to impact lives and communities across the state and beyond.
