Pay rate: $17 to $20/hour on w2 without benefits

Shift hours: 7:30 and 3:30 M-F

Job Description:

  • The Phlebotomist shall perform essentially the same duties as those required of any medical center phlebotomist of similar experience and in similar duty assignments.
  • To provide maintenance and delivery of comprehensive applicable phlebotomy services within the personnel and equipment capabilities of the clinic, and for the quality and timeliness of record preparation and reports indicated to document care and procedures given.
  • To adhere to the administrative guidelines of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and Department of Veterans Affairs Policies. To adhere to strict safety and infection control procedures at all times. This includes quality checks and preventative maintenance on lab equipment as well as maintaining record of tests performed.
  • To provide patient in-processing prior to specimen collection, including review of paperwork accompanying patients and cordial guidance and assistance; perform proper veni-puncture, finger stick procedures and other tests identified by CLIA 88 regulations as being waived, using appropriate techniques; perform set-up and completion of special test-related phlebotomy procedures utilizing appropriate techniques; adhere to laboratory safety protocols; perform phlebotomy-related administrative and clerical procedures of the Front Desk Section of the Lab; fully document all samples obtained per the laboratory's standard operating procedures; interact with other employees and lab management to provide efficient specimen processing service to patients; perform centrifugation procedures as instructed by lab management.
  • To collect blood samples using the vacutainer blood collection system or syringe with needle/butterfly when necessary. The contractor follows established procedures of correctly identifying the patient and for the appropriate specimen to be drawn for the test(s) requested.
  • To collect and process urine samples for both and/or timed collections for testing collected.
  • To accession all specimens collected by entering the order number, ascertaining that all of the correct tests as ordered were drawn, entering the time of specimen collection, and affixing the computer label in the proper manner to the collection tube. Collector shall record initials and time of collection on accession label.
  • To deliver collected blood and urine samples to the appropriate departments at determined times.
  • To answer the tube station; process and deliver samples to the specific departments.
  • Responsible for keeping the Phlebotomy and accessioning area clean and neat at all times and the rotating of all supplies to ensure that all expired tubes are promptly discarded.
  • Responsible for periodically conducting inventory of phlebotomy and other supplies and the restocking of new supplies upon receipt. If there are low inventories of any vacutainer tubes, needles, biohazard containers, etc., the contractor will inform the clinic management.
  • Responsible for ensuring all specimens being sent to the parent facility or a local contractor. are processed and packaged for transport per the instructions of the receiving facility. This may include refrigeration, freezing, room temperature, centrifugation, preparation of manifest, etc.
  • Computer use is mandatory in performing under this contract. Appropriate menu options will be assigned by the parent facility.


Required Qualifications:

  • Meet all licensing/certification requirements to perform as a Phlebotomist in accordance with requirements of the basic contract.
  • Provide evidence of at least 24 months experience or a national or state recognized certification as a phlebotomist.
  • Provide letters of recommendation from three lab supervisors, clinical teachers or physicians attesting to the clinical skills.
  • Reference letters must include name, title, and phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference written within the preceding three years.
  • Certification must be provided before the healthcare worker is allowed to work. Certification must have been executed within the past 60 days.
  • The qualifications of all contractor personnel performing contract work under this contract shall also be subject to review by the VA.


Hours of performance:

  • Between the hours of 7:30 and 3:30 M-F, excluding federal holiday at the Greenville Outpatient Clinic
  • 7 days a week multiple shifts including federal holidays at CVAHCS.
  • The routine workload is scheduled by the treatment facility. Primary workload is related to the provision of medical care by staff health care providers through written or verbal orders.
  • The Contractor will be required to sign an attendance log upon reporting to and departing from work. The eleven holidays observed by the Federal Government are: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, President Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and any other day specifically declared by the President of the United States to be a national holiday.
