College Intern Data Literacy (Hybrid - Troy, MI) - Health Alliance Plan

Health Alliance Plan (HAP) is seeking a motivated and talented individuals to join our Summer 2025 Intern Program. The program will run May 12 - August 8. This paid internship will require 24-40 hours availability (M-F) during the summer session dates. It will be a hybrid work format, involving a combination of remote and onsite work/events in Troy, MI (commute & housing expense reimbursement not provided).

GENERAL SUMMARY:

This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve. As a HAP intern, you will get exposure to various aspects of our organization and work closely with industry professionals, enabling you to develop valuable skills in the healthcare and insurance sector.

In addition to helping your assigned department meet its goals, you will collaborate with the other interns towards a common goal of completing a Capstone Project to present to HAP leadership and employees and the end of the summer. It will also provide the opportunity to attend fun networking events, make new connections, and enhance your presentation skills.

PROGRAM DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Conduct comprehensive research on industry trends, healthcare policies, and emerging technologies. Analyze data and prepare reports to support strategic decision-making processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of projects. Contribute innovative ideas and support the execution of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of healthcare-related data. Ensure data accuracy and integrity, utilizing appropriate software tools and methodologies.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and assisting with customer support activities. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and propose innovative solutions to streamline workflows and enhance productivity. Assist in the implementation of approved process improvement initiatives.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation, including policies, procedures, and project-related materials. Generate regular reports, dashboards, and presentations to effectively communicate project progress and outcomes.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments to support a positive and inclusive work environment. Contribute actively to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.


Department Duties/Responsibilities:

The Data Literacy Program Intern will assist in the execution of HAP's Data Literacy program, Data Literate HAP. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with development of internal SharePoint sites, assisting with data training delivery, producing data how-to documents and other materials, special data literacy projects, and other duties as assigned.

Data Literate HAP is a key, high-profile, program within the organization, and the Data Literacy Program Intern will gain broad exposure to teams, leadership, and operations across the organization. The ideal candidate will be personable, motivated to contribute, and able to quickly learn systems and processes.



  • Assist with SharePoint Site Development: Assist with the manual editing of site elements, text, web apps, graphics, and lists.
  • Assist with Data Training Delivery: Assist with training roster management and organization, communications, and other training delivery functions.
  • Producing Materials: develop how-to documents on data and analytics tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Special Data Literacy Projects: May include collaborating with outside departments, gathering information, and organizing and presenting findings.



PROGRAM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited 4-year undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant field.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis tools.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, initiative, and a desire to learn and grow.
  • Knowledge or interest in healthcare, health insurance, or managed care is a plus.


Department Education/Experience Preferences:



  • Course work in Program Management, Project Management, Health Care, Finance, Data and Analytics, Business Administration, or other closely related field required.
  • Previous experience (either as an employee or intern) within a business environment.
  • Previous experience (either as an employee or intern) with business communication.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI and Azure preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook and Teams preferred.
  • Background in Data and Analytics preferred.
