Gundersen Health Systemis seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist to join our Lab Technical Leader team supporting our Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine. A Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is highly desired, although experienced technologists with expertise and a passion for the blood bank should apply. Experience with Blood Bank techniques commonly used in a Level II trauma center such as antibody titers, running massive transfusion protocols (MTPs), and investigating transfusion reactions is highly desired.

What You'll Do:

As aLab Technical Leader in Blood Bank, you'll utilize your expertise and blood bank knowledge to provide critical support to our Level II trauma center and 325-bed hospital, supporting our mission to provide exceptional patient care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing advanced immunohematology testing and resolving complex serologic challenges

  • Overseeing blood banking operations, including testing, and blood inventory management

  • Working closely with our Blood Bank Medical Director and Blood Bank & Core Lab Manager to provide quality control and quality assurance in blood bank operations

  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies such as AABB, FDA, CAP, and CLIA

  • Developing and implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain accreditation and operational efficiency.

  • Providing training and mentorship to laboratory staff in blood banking practices

  • Collaborating with clinical teams to provide technical expertise and consultation on transfusion-related issues including irradiated blood products, washed products, etc.

  • Monitoring and maintaining blood product inventory to ensure optimal levels for patient care

  • Participating in audits and implementing corrective actions as necessary

From performing advanced immunohematology testing and resolving complex serologic challenges to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of blood bank services, your work will directly impact the health and lives of countless individuals. You will utilize your knowledge and experience to oversee and lead day-to-day operations of our hospital-based blood bank, including testing, analysis, reporting, and troubleshooting while ensuring compliance with laboratory protocols, quality control standards, and regulatory requirements. You will perform complex blood bank testing and crossmatching with accuracy and precision and manage blood and component inventory, ensuring availability for emergencies and routine procedures. You will provide guidance and support to the lab technicians to maintain high-quality standards as well as skills rosters and competency testing of staff. You will be responsible for maintaining all regulatory compliance within the area of responsibility including quality control and assurance documentation, reporting, review and implementation of SOPs, implementation of corrective actions and other necessary duties as assigned to ensure the operational success of our hospital blood bank and trauma center.

What's Available:

  • Fulltime - 72 hours biweekly (0.9 FTE)

  • Day Shift, Monday through Friday, with flexible start times between 5a to 9a

  • Salary range $30-$45/hr, compensation based on experience and blood bank expertise

  • No weekends or holidays scheduled, unless critical coverage gap in staffing

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree, or higher, in Medical Lab Science/Technology or equivalent is required

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting, ideally with a focus on/in high complexity Blood Bank

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and methodologies used in Blood Bank processing and testing antibody identification

  • Experience with Blood Bank techniques common in a Level II Trauma center such as antibody titers, massive transfusion protocols (MTPs), transfusion reactions, etc.

  • A Specialist in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) certification is highly desired; can utilize our Tuition Investment Program for assistance in obtaining this certification
