We are seeking a Senior Network Engineer to provide operational support and management for the NCCoE network environment. This role will involve patching, vulnerability management, systems engineering, and capacity planning to ensure the smooth functioning and security of the network infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in both virtual and physical network environments, specifically with Cisco and Palo Alto Network equipment, and will have the ability to engage with customers and users to understand their requirements and provide strategic solutions. Additionally, you will participate in engineering reviews and architectural discussions to ensure alignment with overall infrastructure objectives.

Established in 2012 through a partnership between the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the State of Maryland and Montgomery County, the (NCCoE) is dedicated to furthering innovation through the rapid identification, integration and adoption of practical Cybersecurity solutions. The NCCoE is part of the NIST Information Technology Laboratory and operates in close collaboration with the Computer Security Division.



Responsibilities

    Provide operational support for the network environment, including patch management, vulnerability assessment, systems engineering, and capacity planning.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable network services and maintain optimal performance and security.
  • Engage with customers and users within the center, answering technical queries, managing expectations, and gathering requirements for network-related IT matters.
  • Participate in engineering reviews and architectural discussions, offering expertise in network solutions and ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal system performance.
  • Provide guidance on network design, architecture, and best practices.
  • Develop documentation and provide training as necessary for staff and users.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of network security policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of network systems, identifying areas for improvement or enhancement.


Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant networking experience in network administration, engineering, and troubleshooting in both virtual and physical environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco and Palo Alto Network equipment.
  • Knowledge of multiple IT domains, including network, systems, and security.
  • Experience with VMWare and network monitoring software.
  • Proficiency in IT security and governance principles and practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Comfortable presenting and interacting with senior management to address concerns and update project progress.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and offer outside-the-box solutions to meet customer needs.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and a focus on high-quality outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating leadership and collaboration skills.

DESIRED:

  • Additional experience with Juniper and Microsoft network environments is a plus.
  • Experience working in a federal environment, with knowledge of federal security and infrastructure guidelines and policies (preferred).
