The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information. Developing a competent public health workforce is integral to the department's mission. The health department looks to enhance its workforce with a dynamic and innovative individual to fill this position within the Community Health Development Division.

Duties include:

  • Support the work of the Fairfax Food Council and workgroups of the Partnership for a Healthier Fairfax.
  • Identify effective relationships, engage new partners and serve as a liaison with multidisciplinary, multisector stakeholders and volunteers throughout the Fairfax Community.
  • Provides support for the convening of partners, stakeholders, and council members.
  • Conducts research and development of outreach materials.
  • Provides technical support for community education and training.
  • Provides community outreach to various ethnic communities, interfaith organizations, non-profit organizations, hard to reach populations, and small businesses.
  • Develop and disseminate timely internal and external communications about events, activities and progress.
  • Gathers and maintains all files and email lists.

Note: Flexible work schedule is required and a successful candidate will be able to work evenings and weekends on an occasional basis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in health education, human services, or a directly related field; plus one year of experience in communicable and/or chronic disease education, investigation or other types of health-related work involving considerable public contact.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • CPR (Required within 60 days)
  • AED (Required within 60 days)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services check, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in public health or related field of study.
  • One or more years of experience performing community outreach, and providing health promotion and prevention education to various ethnic communities, non-profit organizations, hard to reach populations, small businesses and faith communities.
  • One or more years of experience working with community coalitions and with volunteers.
  • Experience working with a Food Council.
  • One or more years of experience designing, implementing, and contributing to community-based health initiatives with culturally and age-diverse populations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, such as community members, businesses, nonprofits and faith-based groups.
  • One or more years of experience working independently.
  • Must communicate effectively using verbal, written and electronic means.
  • Advanced knowledge of basic Microsoft Office Suite applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
