Job Summary:

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the development and scheduling of maintenance technicians, development and scheduling of preventive maintenance, implementation of process improvements, and ensures that all the equipment is in proper working order while still maintaining food safety and quality requirements. Manage and assist in the completion of the day-to-day activities, involving the maintenance of the building/facility, equipment, grounds keeping, security and overall facility appearances.

Essential Functions of the Job:



  • Respond to requests for repairs and modifications of general plant equipment and systems.
  • Determine the causes of malfunctions, along with the extent of repairs /modifications needed.
  • Determine the cost feasibility, timetables, & priority of plant capabilities, capacities, & usage.


  • Understanding of the Aseptic and/or thermal processing flow and terminology a plus.
  • Understanding of Separation Equipment and Commodity Milling Equipment.
  • Experience of Ammonia refrigeration equipment and PMs.
  • Supervise and Train the staff for all PMs of equipment. This includes separation and milling equipment.
  • Facilitates team meetings and 1:1s with staff.
  • Oversee the performance of outside contractors.
  • Coordinates the completion of repair/modification projects with contractors, vendors, and maintenance support services.
  • Develops long and short-term plans for maintenance project needs.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance is being completed.
  • Complete repairs to equipment that can be accomplished with resources available.
  • Maintain and ensure that good housekeeping practices are being followed.
  • Maintains Preventative maintenance program documents.
  • Ability to update, train, and develop (SOPs/Redzone Plays/LOTO Procedures)
  • Understands root cause and has ability to facilitate SRCs.
  • Maintain sufficient inventories of parts and supplies to keep equipment properly maintained.
  • Ability to assist with Parts, Supplies, and General Maintenance budgeting and KPI reporting.
  • Helps ensure that food safety and quality requirements are maintained when preventative maintenance, equipment repairs and improvements, and facility construction is happening.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to include availability on days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Any other duties assigned by manager.

  • Onsite Contractors
  • Site Production and Maintenance Mechanics
  • Site Lead Production Maintenance Technicians
  • Assists with directing site Facility Maintenance Technicians



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree or related field experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive maintenance experience.
  • 2 years' experience in a supervisory role.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Strong working knowledge of systems having a high level of instrumentation and automation.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing Practices.
  • Experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Oracle / MVP / Redzone is beneficial.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, multi-tasking and presentation skills.
  • Ability to create momentum and foster organizational change.



Knowledge and Skills:



  • Strong knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Must be able to operate equipment in production area.
  • Must be able to prepare and maintain accurate paperwork.
  • Ability to analyze a situation and communicate proper information needed to resolve issues.
  • Follow all safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Understand terminology related to the process equipment.
  • Able to supervise and maintain an engaged team of employees.
  • Adapt to changes in work environment; Able to deal with frequent changes/delays or unexpected events that can change production schedules and work schedules.
  • Must be able to train new process operators.
  • Ability to express thoughts/ideas in order to improve process operation within guidelines.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Maintain good attendance
  • Safely operate all grounds equipment. Ie, forklift, skid loader, yard truck, MEWP.
  • Able to lift minimum of 50 pounds and at times more.
  • Be able to climb bins ladders and steps in high places.
  • Able to work in hot and cold situations.

Additional Considerations:



  • Travel Expectation: Up to 10%.
  • This position will be based at the 3rd Ave SunOpta Plant in Alexandria, MN.
  • Shift: This role will be primarily a 6am to 3pm; Monday through Friday. Flexibility will be needed to support maintenance functions and support staff on nights/weekends on a regular scheduled frequency.
  • Work Environment: Approximately 50% of the work is performed in an office/shop environment; 50% of the work will be in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Relocation or international remote working arrangements (outside of the US) will not be considered.
