The Field Intelligence Operations Division at ORNL is seeking an Application Systems Administrator to evaluate, deploy, configure, and support software applications and IT systems, ensuring their reliability, security, and optimal performance. The successful candidate will work closely with systems engineers, analysts, and collaborators to enhance workflows, optimize infrastructure, and implement strategic IT solutions.

As a member of our team, you will collaborate with a highly skilled group of IT professionals committed to enhancing system performance, security, and reliability. In this role, you will be instrumental in supporting advanced IT operations, including application integration, security compliance, Active Directory management, virtualization platforms, and overall system optimization. Your expertise will play a key role in improving IT efficiency, strengthening security measures, and scaling infrastructure to contribute to the organization's long-term objectives.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Application Administration & Support

  • Evaluate, deploy, and maintain software applications for IT systems and engineering tools.
  • Provide proactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and performance tuning for mission-critical applications.
  • Administer and configure JIRA, Confluence, and other business collaboration tools.
  • Investigate and propose application enhancements and workflow optimizations based on collaborator input.
  • Provide custom queries, reports, and automation scripts to improve operational efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain training materials, documentation, and process guides for end-users.

System Administration & Infrastructure Management

  • Diagnose and resolve escalated server, desktop, storage, and network-related issues.
  • Administer and optimize Windows servers, ensuring security patches and updates are applied.
  • Configure and manage virtualization environments such as VMware and Hyper-V.
  • Perform regular system backups, disaster recovery planning, and failover testing.
  • Collaborate with Network and Server teams to troubleshoot and analyze system logs.

Engineering & CAD Application Support

  • Install, configure, and maintain SolidWorks PDM and related engineering software.
  • Manage SQL databases, license servers, and integrations related to engineering tools.
  • Develop mechanisms and automation for deploying updates and configuration changes across environments.

Automation & Optimization

  • Automate system deployments, patches, and updates using PowerShell, Python, or Bash scripting.
  • Revise existing programs to improve efficiency and reduce operating time.
  • Optimize existing workflows and help develop and implement new ones to improve operational efficiency.

Security, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with industry security standards (STIG, NIST, RMF) by implementing security best practices.
  • Develop and maintain IT procedures, and security documentation related to infrastructure and applications.
  • Conduct system security audits, vulnerability assessments, and risk mitigation planning.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in information technology, computer science, or a related field and five (5) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Application administration, system support, or IT infrastructure management experience.
  • Experience in Windows Server (2019/2022), Active Directory, and Group Policy.
  • Experience with enterprise applications such as JIRA, Confluence, SolidWorks PDM, and SQL-based platforms.
  • Experience scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
  • Experience with SQL database management and troubleshooting.
  • Experience working in multi-functional teams and collaborating with partners.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of server virtualization technologies (VMware, Hyper-V, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and reporting.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+, MCSA, MCSE, CCNA, or ITIL.
  • Experience managing SQL Server.
  • Experience with IT security best practices and compliance frameworks.
  • Understanding of networking concepts, firewalls, and security protocols.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
