Job Description: ABVI Intern at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital Position Title: ABVI Intern Department: Assistive Technology and Vision Impairment (ABVI) Location: Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, Grand Rapids, MI Reports To: ABVI Program Manager/Coordinator Position Overview: The ABVI Intern will work closely with the Assistive Technology and Vision Impairment (ABVI) team at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital to assist patients with vision impairments in navigating daily activities and utilizing assistive technology tools. The intern will gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting, enhancing their understanding of vision rehabilitation practices while supporting patients through their rehabilitation journey. Key Responsibilities:
- Help patients integrate assistive technology into daily activities, enhancing their independence and quality of life.
- Helping assist research in equipment needed for patients.
- Create/assist in the standards of practice, documentation of patients, and development.
- Be able to assist in trouble shooting guidelines in accordance of ABVI.
- Assist in creating educational materials and resources for patients and staff related to vision impairments and assistive technology.
- Participate in outreach and awareness initiatives to promote vision rehabilitation services at Mary Free Bed.
- Attend and participate in relevant educational seminars, training sessions, or workshops to enhance skills and knowledge in the field of vision rehabilitation.
- Will help create and assist in the ABVI website and newsletter.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a degree program in Non-Profit, Business, HR, Healthcare Management, Operations, or a related field.
- A strong interest in working with individuals with vision impairments and disabilities.
- Basic knowledge of assistive technology devices and tools for people with visual impairments (preferred, but not required).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in patient care.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Willingness to learn and a passion for providing quality care to individuals with vision impairments.
- Understanding on how to upload documents/referrals into epic.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and assist with mobility devices or equipment as needed.
- Duration:
This is a full-time, unpaid internship position with the opportunity for academic credit, depending on your institution's guidelines. The internship is expected to last for a duration of 12 weeks, with flexibility for scheduling based on academic requirements.
