Position Summary

Sony Corporation of America ("SCA"), the U.S. holding company of Sony Group Corporation ("SGC"), has an excellent opportunity for an experienced attorney with substantial compliance and litigation experience.

The SCA Legal Department provides comprehensive, proactive legal services to internal clients, and coordinates closely with the legal teams of our global affiliates and parent company. We work in a fast-paced, hands-on, small-team environment, where being both a self-starter and team player is critical.

The attorney will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing Sony's global ethics and compliance program, maintaining trust in the Sony brand, and overseeing litigation matters involving SCA and other Sony Group companies. The successful candidate will manage one or more direct reports.

This is a hybrid position, currently requiring three days in office.

Key Responsibilities

Ethics & Compliance

  • Continuously assess the maturity and effectiveness of Sony's compliance program and enhance as necessary to ensure alignment with legal requirements, strategic goals, and best practices.

  • Identify ethics and compliance risks through the implementation of a robust risk assessment framework.

  • Advise and support U.S. affiliate compliance personnel on global program implementation and applicable legal/regulatory requirements.

  • Assist SGC's Corporate Social Responsibility Department with management of responsible sourcing initiatives and human rights risks in Sony's operations and supply chains.

  • Develop, revise, and implement global and SCA ethics and compliance policies to manage risks.

  • Develop global ethics and compliance training and communications materials that promote ethical conduct.

  • Conduct and/or supervise internal investigations for Sony Group companies headquartered in the Americas.

  • Coordinate annual global compliance conferences to foster shared knowledge among compliance personnel and sharing of resources to drive down compliance related costs.

Litigation

  • Provide support and counsel to business units regarding potential litigation issues and manage active litigation.

  • Oversee and interact with outside counsel on litigation matters, including formulating litigation strategies and budgets; assisting in drafting and reviewing briefs, motions, and court pleadings; coordinating and preparing witnesses; managing discovery; and other litigation activities.

  • Coordinate response on U.S. litigation matters involving SGC and/or multiple Sony affiliates.

  • Respond to third-party subpoenas.

  • Administer document preservation and e-discovery.

Qualifications

  • A J.D. degree and membership in good standing in the New York bar. (Non-New York attorneys would be required to register as an in-house counsel with the State Bar of New York.)

  • Minimum of 12 years of related legal experience in a top law firm, governmental agency, and/or in-house role.

  • Experience building compliance programs, including an in-depth knowledge of corporate ethics and compliance program requirements. Expertise in anti-corruption, antitrust, anti-money laundering, insider trading, economic sanctions, and social responsibility laws preferred.

  • Background conducting internal investigations and managing investigation processes. Experience interfacing with regulators preferred.

  • Experience managing litigation matters independently.

  • Proficiency using technology to manage litigation matters and to implement effective compliance programs.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a proactive approach to risk management.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • High ethical standards and integrity.

  • Available for domestic and international travel, as necessary.

The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $270,000 to $295,000. This range does not include any other compensation components or other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
