General Summary of Position Are you a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist looking for a flexible and rewarding opportunity? Join our dynamic team in the Blood Bank at Franklin Square Medical Center! In this role you, will perform a variety of routine and special laboratory procedures within the blood bank, including microbiology testing. In addition, you will be responsible for evaluating and reporting results for use in patient diagnosis and treatment.
This role is PRN (per diem) and we are ideally seeking someone that can commit to one evening shift (3pm-11:30pm) weekend (Sat/Sun) per month. There is additional opportunity to pick up an additional weekend or fill in shifts as needed based on department need. Training for this role will ideally be on day shift or evening shift for several weeks to ensure adequate competency to work on weekend evenings.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Maintains inventory supply; stocks and maintains neat, orderly work area.Operates and maintains laboratory equipment in areas of assignment; troubleshoots problems; and validates and documents information as required per standard protocol.Participates in surveys, conducts established quality control of procedures, evaluates results, implements corrective action when indicated, and ensures accuracy of test results.Performs a wide variety of routine and special procedures following prescribed protocol and using manual or automated methods; calculates and reports results as established; consults with pathologist regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings.Prepares and evaluates statistical data, cost analysis, and daily tallies for monthly reports.Prepares, evaluates, and labels reagents, media, etc., per procedure.Processes specimens ensuring accuracy of identification; confidentiality of information; and appropriate preparation, storage, and transportation; may perform specimen procurement as required.Sets up and evaluates new procedures; performs comparison studies for linearity, precision, accuracy, etc.; and determines normal ranges.Trains new employees and students. Instructs others in new procedures; evaluates and documents performance.Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Minimum Qualifications Education
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science/Technology or closely related field required
- Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology may be considered for candidates with 5 or more years of progressively responsible blood bank experience with demonstrated ability to perform the duties of the medical technologist position.
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist ASCP strongly preferred

- Basic computer skills preferred.
