Position Purpose







A Surgical Technician Apprentice must be enrolled and active in a pre-licensure Surgical Technologist program and be cleared and approved to begin their clinical hours or accepted into the Renown Health led Surgical University training program. Incumbent will perform Surgical Technologist duties while studying toward certification, within limits of current training; work is done side by side with their preceptor and guided and overseen by operating room leadership. The apprentice will work in a collaborative environment to deliver excellent patient care under the direction of the operating room leadership. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program, individual will be eligible to interview for a Surgical Technologist position within the organization.









Nature and Scope







This position serves a patient population of Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric.

All duties will be overseen by preceptor and or operating room leadership.

This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, other surgery staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.

This position will be able to facilitate all aspects of a surgical technologist as a scrub person, within limits of current training, during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the surgical and assigned preceptor.

The demands on this position are very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures, technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, policies, procedures, and

because of surgeon's preferences in equipment, instruments, needles, and suture.

This position will assist with obtaining the type of equipment and supplies required for the surgical care of the patient relative to the surgeon's preference cards and knowledge of the procedure, and to identify any breakdown in aseptic technique and take appropriate action. This position may assist the Surgeon and Advanced Practice Professional with procedures and treatments as trained and directed. The apprentice is responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, correct use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite under the direction of an RN.

This position ensures equipment is working properly before surgical procedure, cares for

equipment after procedure and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken. During the procedure, the primary responsibility of the individual is to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, to anticipate the needs of the surgeons, passing instruments in a timely fashion. Once the procedure is completed, care for the instrumentation, equipment and prepare for the following case. This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby, providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist, and co-workers.

2. Basic hand-eye coordination.

3. Skills for providing patient care of technical nature under the supervision of a registered nurse.

4. Skills for performing scrub duties, which facilitate the work of the surgeon.

5. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial and safety appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Education:



Must have working-level knowledge of English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Must be currently enrolled in a formal surgical technologist school program.



Experience:



Preferred: Knowledge of medical terminology; prior healthcare experience. Must be cleared and approved to begin their clinical hours.



License(s):



None



Certification(s):



BLS certification by the American Heart Association standards required.



Computer / Typing:



Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
