Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine is committed to excellence in education, research, and patient care. As New Mexico's only academic medical center, the department plays a pivotal role in training the next generation of surgical leaders and advancing the field through groundbreaking research initiatives. The department offers comprehensive clinical services across a range of surgical specialties, including acute care surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, general and gastrointestinal surgery, otolaryngology, pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, surgical oncology, urology, and vascular surgery.

The Department of Surgery at the UNM School of Medicine is seeking a detail oriented and
professional Accountant II who brings strong accounting experience, eective communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. This is a great opportunity for a motivated self starter with strong problem-solving abilities and a commitment to scal accountability. The Accountant II will play a key role in a variety of nancial operations. Primary responsibilities in
assisting budget entry, monitoring, and monthly reconciliation of indexes, as well as preparing and updating nancial statements, projection reports, and other nancial documents. This role will also process a range of nancial transactions such as PCard reconciliations and approvals, reimbursements, requisitions, journal vouchers, labor redistributions, and coordinating billings.
The position supports the department by creating new indexes and contributing to the annual budget process.

This position provides guidance to faculty and staff on accounting procedures and ensures compliance with UNM policies and fiscal standards. The successful candidate will also review expenditures for compliance with institutional and sponsor requirements across unrestricted accounts and sponsored projects.

Position is in office to start but will transition to hybrid with some required days in office.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with UNM financial systems (e.g., Banner, Chrome River, LoboMart, MyReports).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UNM accounting policies, procedures, and fund types (e.g., unrestricted, restricted, contracts & grants).
  • Familiarity with PCard reconciliations, journal vouchers, labor redistributions, and non-standard payment processes.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools.
  • Experience in assisting in and interpreting budget projections and financial reports.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service mindset.
  • Experience providing accounting support and policy guidance to non-financial staff or faculty.
  • Providing training and backup services to fiscal staff as needed Ability to research, collect, analyze, compile data, and develop financial reports.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
