What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking an Electrical Engineering Manager to lead electronics hardware development for new product development (NPD) within our Controls & Building Automation Systems (BAS) division. In this role, you will drive the design and development of BAS controllers, sensors, thermostats, actuators, and refrigeration controllers, playing a critical role in shaping the next generation of smart building technologies.

As the Electrical Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of design engineers, test engineers and technicians to oversee end-to-end product development, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure our products meet performance, reliability, and regulatory standards. You will leverage your expertise in electronics design, embedded systems, and industrial controls to develop innovative, high-quality solutions that enhance energy efficiency, sustainability, and automation in commercial and industrial buildings.This position is based onsite in Glendale, WI. Candidates must be commuting distance or willing/able to relocate. How you will do it

Leadership & Team Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of electrical engineers focused on new product development for BAS controllers and related devices.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide technical leadership in circuit design, embedded hardware, and power management for industrial automation products.

  • Drive team growth through training, goal-setting, and performance management.

  • Lead, coach and motivate HW team to achieve success and grow.

New Product Development & Electronics Hardware Design:

  • Oversee the design, prototyping, and validation of BAS controllers, sensors, thermostats, actuators, and refrigeration control systems.

  • Determines best approach for engineering problem solving.

  • Determines best approach for electronics hardware development cycle from concept to production.

  • Expert in electronics circuit development , both digital and analog .

  • Provides system level design architecture for new product development. Defines MCU / MPU platform strategy .

  • Oversees and defines specifications for parts, design, and testing.

  • Provide innovative idea generation in product development process improvements and refinements particularly as they apply to electronic hardware development.

  • Lead the development of analog and digital circuits, microcontroller-based designs, wired/wireless communication interfaces (BACnet, Modbus, Zigbee, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.), and other electronics for Controls products.

  • Ensure products meet performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and cybersecurity requirements for modern building automation solutions.

  • Conduct and oversee design reviews, system simulations, and prototype testing to validate hardware performance.

  • Drive DFMEA, DFM, and DFT strategies to ensure robust and manufacturable designs.

Project & Process Management:

  • Collaborate with product management, software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to define specifications and technical requirements for new products.

  • Manage the technical roadmap and development timelines for multiple new product initiatives.

  • Ensure timely execution of NPD projects while maintaining design quality and regulatory compliance.

  • Lead risk assessment, cost analysis, and design optimization efforts to enhance product competitiveness.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline development cycles and reduce time-to-market.

  • Regulatory & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and certifications relevant to BAS products, including UL, CE, FCC, ISO, and ASHRAE requirements.

  • Lead EMC/EMI mitigation strategies and oversee product testing for compliance.

  • Stay up to date with building automation regulations, energy efficiency standards, and cybersecurity best practices.

What you will need
Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in electronics hardware design and new product development, with at least 10 years in a leadership role.

  • Proven track record in BAS controllers, industrial control systems, or IoT-enabled smart building technologies.

  • Experience in end-to-end product development, from concept to production launch.

  • Expertise in circuit design, microcontroller-based systems, power electronics, and wired/wireless communication protocols used in building automation.

  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, KiCad).

  • Strong understanding of signal integrity, power management, and embedded system design for industrial and commercial applications.

  • Hands-on experience with lab testing, debugging, and failure analysis.

  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT) best practices.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across engineering, product management, and manufacturing teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple NPD projects, balancing innovation with cost and time-to-market constraints.

  • Passion for mentoring, team development, and building high-performance engineering teams.

Preferred
Experience with BACnet, Modbus, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other IoT protocols
