Job Summary:

This position is in the Wisconsin Centers for Nanoscale Technology, Nanoscale Fabrication Center, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The center is a 10,000 sf cleanroom facility for nanoscale fabrication that supports a broad range of research by students, staff, faculty and industrial clients with interest in micro and nano fabrication and device development. The position will primarily support plasma etch and lithography process development and monitoring for our userbase, but may also be required to support other process technologies (deposition, packaging, wet chemistry, etc.)


Responsibilities:
Provides technical expertise in a research, development, or scientific program. Develops, modifies, adapts, and may design equipment to create unique systems in support of research, development, or instruction, involving, but not limited to, the disciplines of electronics, mechanical/thermal systems, optics, and/or computers.

  • 25% Provides technical expertise to staff, researchers, clients, and students in the installation and use of equipment and instruments, exercising discretion and independent judgment to meet unit goals
  • 5% Develops, integrates, tests, modifies, and may design sophisticated scientific equipment to support research/clinical initiatives and unit directives
  • 20% Designs, plans, and performs preventative and reactive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • 20% Answers questions and provides technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students
  • 5% Investigates new research processes and technology solutions in collaboration with research/clinical staff, students, and clients
  • 10% Supports troubleshooting efforts to define and resolve problems
  • 5% Facilitates the billing process
  • 5% Maintain and support the operations of the Center
  • 5% Make the center a safe environment for everyone. Monitor researchers for safe practices and enforce safety policies. Monitor the facility for unsafe conditions and rectify them

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Science


Qualifications:

Required:
- Minimum of 10 years experience in an engineering role
- Experience training users on scientific instrumentation
- Experience with equipment and instrument installation, maintenance and calibration
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to work well in a team

Preferred:
- Experience in development of instructional materials and process documentation
- Experience designing and running experiments using sound scientific methods and the ability to interpret the data using statistical analysis.
- Excellent organizational skills for maintaining processes, procedures and laboratory work areas in a professional manner.
- A strong commitment to continuous improvement of processes, procedures, equipment and methods.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
