Summary of Job Duties:The Research Assistant provides support for the translational sciences research laboratory in the Department of Pediatrics. This position will perform laboratory experiments related to the study of fungal genetics and biology with a focus on Aspergillus fumigatus virulence and antifungal drug resistance pathways under the direction of the laboratory principal investigator. Key responsibilities include routine laboratory work, ordering supplies, preparation of media and reagents, setting up antifungal drug testing assays, and performing virulence assays using mouse models of infection. This position will interact with the Principal Investigator (PI), faculty researchers, senior research staff, classified research staff, medical trainees, and undergraduate students on the Arkansas Children's campus. Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a science-related field plus three (3) years of research experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Work closely with various laboratory animal specimens.

  • Must possess the ability to independently make decisions and problem solve or to escalate the issue as needed.

  • Must possess the ability to set priorities and maintain a high level of organization.

  • Must possess a high degree of initiative and the ability to work independently.

  • Must be able to interact professionally with others one-on-one and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of laboratory experience in microbiology and molecular biology methods with mouse handling expertise.

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize molecular biology techniques including PCR, RT-PCR, cloning, DNA, RNA, protein extractions, and mouse model handling.

  • Perform routine laboratory work and experiments.

  • Accurate and timely record-keeping of experimental procedures.

  • Data processing, analysis, charting/graphing, and presentation as directed by PI.

  • Preparation of figures for publication.

  • Perform literature searches to find research information on related procedures and previous studies

  • Placing orders (obtaining quotes, filling and submitting ordering forms, tracking order status and receiving orders).

  • Maintaining records of laboratory inventories (reagents and supplies).

  • Responsible for routine cleaning and maintenance of lab equipment and cleaning/sterilization of labware.

  • Train new employees and/or students in the operation of the laboratory and basic techniques such as cell culture.

  • Overseeing staff compliance with the University, State and Federal guidelines for the safe operation of a laboratory.

  • Provides support to the PI for grant submission and reporting.

  • May perform other duties as assigned.
