What you will do

You will play a crucial role in ensuring that entry values are properly reported to import authorities. You will maintain and apply up-to-date regulatory expertise to ensure Johnson Controls (JCI) complies with federal regulations for valuation of imports, while updating internal controls and procedure manuals in accordance with business needs and regulations.

How you will do it

  • Act as the import valuation subject matter expert and perform day-to-day import operations.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis to determine the appropriate customs valuation for imported goods, ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) regulations and international trade laws.

  • Apply and interpret various customs valuation methodologies (e.g., transaction value, deductive value, computed value) to establish the correct customs value of goods.

  • Review and verify import documentation, including commercial invoices, purchase orders, contracts, and shipping documents, to ensure that values declared to customs are accurate and compliant.

  • Coordinate with customs officials to ensure entry values are updated.

  • Maintain accurate records of all applicable transactions.

  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with trade regulations.

  • Ensure reconciliation entries are filed in a timely manner.

  • Work with related party plant Finance personnel to ensure Actual Cost Submissions are prepared timely and accurately.

  • Provide guidance on valuation adjustments and impact on duties paid.

  • Work with related parties to understand impact of related party transfer pricing on import values.

  • Handle customs inquiries and actions timely to minimize the risks of fines and penalties.

  • Develop and deliver training sessions to internal teams, including procurement, logistics, and finance, on customs valuation processes, compliance requirements, and best practices.

  • Assist in preparing for and supporting internal and external audits related to customs valuation and compliance activities, providing necessary documentation and analysis.

What we look for

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional experience

  • Experience in finance, cost accounting, supply chain management, or related field

  • Strong understanding of trade compliance regulations as they relate to valuation

  • Ability to work with regulatory bodies and manage compliance documentation

  • Ability to quickly analyze, compare, and interpret detailed and sometimes poorly defined information and make sound and accurate conclusions

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Excellent judgement, creativity, flexibility

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaboratively

  • Detail oriented and highly organized; ability to multi-task several tasks/projects at once

  • Ability to adapt to rapid change, work with a sense of urgency, and effective time management

Preferred:

  • Licensed customs broker

  • Bilingual - English/Spanish

  • High level understanding of materials flow - Supply Chain (warehouse entries, cycle counting, materials adjustments, scrap)
