Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

Position Summary

Manages teams directly involved in operations & maintenance of the gas distribution system including completing all unplanned, emergent work and all mandated program work. Oversees personnel performing maintenance work, short-cycle construction work, immediate response activities and all mandated programs.

This position is flexible within Oakland and Richmond, headquarters will be agreed upon by the successful candidate and hiring leader.

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

A reasonable salary range is:

Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area) $ 129,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area) $ 207,000.00

Job Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of gas craft employees, ensuring compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements and alignment with company values.
  • Serves customers by providing timely completion of gas maintenance, gas construction, transmission & regulatory work, and or gas damage control. Ensures that work is executed safely including personal and public safety metrics
  • Manages emergency responses to all requests including equipment maintenance, ensuring employees respond in a timely manner and provide total quality service.
  • Monitors compliance to standards and specifications, to achieve high quality work the first time done. Develops action plans to address deficiencies in process or employee skill/knowledge and tracks the progress of those plans.
  • Ensures work is executed within scope, schedule and cost expectations
  • Identifies and pursues productivity improvements and implements work practices to reduce operating costs while meeting corporate and regulatory compliance.
  • Completes and maintains all work documentation and/or reporting.
  • Communicates business goals and objectives to the work group and holds all accountable to same.
  • Develops the business knowledge and technical skills of all field employees. Fosters teamwork within work group and across all company functions.
  • Ensures that customers' needs and expectations are met; ensures clear, professional, proactive communication with customers.
  • Fully implements and holds subordinates accountable for safety best practices and adherence to the safety accountability model. Ensures full compliance with the Injury & Illness Prevention Program, working closely with area Safety Program Coordinators. Facilitates weekly team meetings/tailboards and adjunct training as needed.
  • Leads root-cause investigations on all PG&E at-fault dig-ins and/or reportable events.
  • Monitors the Gas Operator Qualification (OQ) Program and ensures compliance. Maintains craft qualification records for employees, such as welding and plastic fusion as required by CPUC.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • High-School Diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License or equivalent on day one of hire
  • 5 years of relevant experience. Relevant experience may include exposure to utility, maintenance, construction, operations, logistics or service planning work.
  • Subject to random DOT drug and alcohol testing
  • Requires regular travel to projects and to visit employees in the field within assigned geographic area using personal vehicle.
  • Stands on and conducts emergency on- call; works unusual hours in emergency situations.

Desired:

  • Previous leadership experience, e.g., as a crew foreman.
  • Experience leading union- represented employees.
  • Utility experience.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, Construction, Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience serving and meeting the needs of internal and/or external customers.
  • Safety: Ability to create, promote and manage a safe work environment
  • Budget/Expenses: Ability to develop and manage dept. budgets, expenses, variances Communication: Ability to communicate and support company and organization policies, procedures, goals, objectives, vision and values

  • Relationship Management: Ability to develop working relationships with customers and business partners where operations, service, support or other inter-dependencies exist

  • Leadership Presence: Ability to convey credibility, confidence and sense of authority. Conveys messages simply, concisely and at right pace and tone for audience. Remains calm, controlled and productive when confronted by opposition or work stress.
  • Functional Expertise: Ability to foster a learning environment and to develop employees to ensure backfills and successors. Has an understanding of PG&E's business to maximize results, limit risks and effectively lead group. Obtain necessary training for functional are of expertise (i.e. NACE Cert, HAZMAT Cert, etc.)
  • Technical Knowledge & Expertise:
    • Working knowledge of the IBEW Contract.
    • General computer skills in MS Office package along with daily routine experience of e-mail communications
    • Ability to perform effectively under deadlines and in emergency situations
