As a Resource Counselor Coordinator, you are a critical member of the patient access team-helping patients and families navigate the financial side of healthcare with empathy, accuracy, and professionalism. You will gather key demographic and financial information, educate patients on benefits and payment responsibilities, and assist them in applying for financial assistance programs such as Medicaid, Social Security Disability, and other resources. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving problems, supporting patients during stressful moments, and improving the overall patient experience through clear communication and thoughtful service. Key Responsibilities:
Interview patients, families, and other responsible parties to obtain insurance and financial information in various settings: bedside, phone, ambulatory clinics, or online Access and update patient information in clinical and financial systems with accuracy Educate patients about their insurance coverage, out-of-pocket responsibilities, and available financial assistance options Guide patients through applications for financial support programs, including Medicaid, hospital discount programs, Social Security Disability, and Crime Victims Assistance Collaborate with internal departments and external resources to ensure timely processing and support Support front-line staff by providing mentorship, assigning tasks, and assisting with difficult or escalated patient concerns Use sound judgment and multiple systems to assess eligibility and make informed financial recommendations Reconcile accounts, apply adjustments when appropriate, and resolve discrepancies Identify and report process or system improvements based on patient interactions
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent At least 12 months of experience as a Resource Counselor II, Patient Access Representative II, or equivalent position Prior performance rating of "Meets Expectations" or higher in your most recent evaluation Working knowledge of basic medical terminology Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, clinical staff, and third-party payors Proven ability to work independently in high-volume, fast-paced environments Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities High level of professionalism, emotional intelligence, and empathy
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook) Bilingual (Spanish-speaking preferred)
