Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Dental Faculty Practice provides general and specialty dental and maxillofacial treatment with faculty from various clinical departments and groups (i.e. general dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, dental implants, oral medicine, orofacial pain, periodontics, prosthodontics, pathology, radiology, special care, and endodontics). The clinical team consists of caring and competent clinical assistants, hygienists, administrative and financial personnel. An advantage to patients is that they can see multiple dental specialists as part of the same practice; these specialists are clinicians, educators and researchers that are committed to providing the highest quality of care for their patients.
Position Summary
The Registered Dental Hygienist ( RDH) plays a crucial role in providing oral health care. Our services enhance the overall well-being of our patients through optimal oral health. As a North Carolina State Dental Board licensed professional, the RDH is responsible for assessment, preventive care, specialized care, therapeutic care and education that empower patients to maintain their health and understand the connection between oral health and systemic health.

The ASOD Registered Dental Hygienists serve as the first line of triage for our Dental Faculty Practice dentists. A high level of dental hygiene skills, knowledge, and competency is essential for the success of our school's mission. Each position adheres to the highest standards, requiring a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of dental hygiene. Our advanced-level registered dental hygienists provide clinical care to a diverse range of patients, encompassing both general and specialty care dentistry. They are adept at recognizing and treating patients with varying medical conditions, from healthy to severely compromised states. Their services include all forms of dental hygiene care, including non-surgical periodontal therapies utilizing advanced instrumentation techniques. Additionally, they are skilled in administering local anesthesia. Our hygienists excel at delivering personalized oral health education tailored to individual patient needs. They collaborate closely with general and specialty dentists to co-diagnose specific hygiene services for our patients. The expertise of our registered dental hygienists is vital, as our general and specialty care providers rely on their advanced skills to identify, treat, and refer various dental hygiene needs and other dental pathologies. In addition, they actively engage with volunteers, students, and residents, fostering a collaborative learning environment that enhances the educational experience. Our hygienists actively participate in professional development opportunities, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the field. This commitment to ongoing education enhances their skills and knowledge, allowing them to provide the highest quality care

At Adams School of Dentistry, the RDH supports a range of general and specialty clinics including Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Operative, Pediatric, Craniofacial/Geriatric/Hospital, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology with a primary focus in the Dental Faculty Practice. By collaborating with general dentists, specialist and other dental team members, our Registered Dental Hygienists contribute their expertise to deliver comprehensive care that recognizes the impact of oral health on overall health and well-being of the patient.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must be licensed to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of North Carolina. Candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and regulations governing dental hygiene in accordance with the North Carolina State Dental Board and the Dental Hygiene Practice Act including patient care protocols, medical guidelines, clinical procedures and patient care management. Candidate must have ability to apply continual learning of new clinical treatments, techniques, and technologies.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Certified to administer Local Anesthesia, not required but will be encouraged. Candidate must be willing to research, learn and apply new clinical treatments, techniques, and technologies.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The Dental Hygienist is expected to stand and/or sit for an extended period of time with or without accommodation. Mental concentration for patient treatment and precise handling of dental instruments is essential.
