Job Summary

Provides technical expertise in the area of forensic chemistry through activities including but not limited to design and delivery of scientific experiments; analysis and interpretation of data; instrumentation and materials readiness activities; and quality assurance activities. Provides technical content development and instructional delivery. Performs research, testing, and evaluation activities and formal presentation of findings. Provides project coordination activities as assigned.

  • Provides support for project planning activities including identification of site/location, contract resources, materials, equipment, etc.
  • Provides project execution activities such as task/activity scheduling & follow up; costs/resource expenditure tracking; and status communication to team members.
  • Performs project closeout activities including assistance with final reports and/or internal documentation in partnership with contracts administration.
  • Liaises with Forensic Chemistry Section Leader to identify instructional objectives, design program of instruction and establish evaluation criteria. Partners with Forensic Chemistry Section Leader to ensure that instructional material is accurate and reflects current/relevant and appropriate information.
  • Performs technical content development and/or accuracy review for training and technical materials. Develops and implements practical exercises and training scenarios that maintain relevancy with customer's current operations.
  • Partners with instructional design team as needed to develop appropriate job aides and hands-on exercises.
  • Prepares required course materials, scenario/exercise setup, instrumentation readiness, sample and reagent preparation; etc.
  • Participates in cross-training and delivery of Forensic Science disciplines outside of subject matter expertise area as requested/assigned. Carry out instruction and training activities for class-room, laboratory, and e-learning environments.
  • Engages with students for learning support, progress evaluation, coaching and remedial learning, and required documentation.
  • Reviews and analyzes course evaluations to identify and implement appropriate material revisions along with efficiency/effectiveness improvements.
  • Ensures course-related supplies and materials are maintained in compliance with government contracts, order procurement, and inventory control procedures.
  • Identifies opportunities for test & evaluation activities. Conducts data analysis and evaluation; prepare presentation of findings (posters, white papers, presentations, etc.).
  • Provide technical input to Laboratory Services area for infrastructure planning and readiness in the areas of equipment and materials resource needs.
  • Carry out instrumentation maintenance activities and conduct troubleshooting as needed; provide liaison activities with service representatives.
  • Assists with development and maintenance of laboratory standard operation policies and procedures for the Chemistry section. Maintains lab logbooks, documentation, and laboratory activities in compliance with established National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) quality assurance guidelines, standardized lab protocols and practices, as well as quality standards for forensic laboratories.
  • Assures that quality standards are established and all laboratory activities are performed in accordance with NFSTC quality assurance guidelines, standardized lab protocols and practices, as well as quality standards for forensic laboratories.
  • Prepares reagents, samples, and other readiness materials as needed. Performs hands-on activities in support of lab cleanliness and safety protocol compliance. Assists with the disposal and maintenance of biohazard materials and chemicals.
  • Participates in cross-training and delivery of Forensic Science disciplines outside of subject matter expertise area as requested/assigned.
  • Serves as a technical expert for National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) Analytical Chemistry activities. Represents NFSTC as a subject matter expert in forensic Chemistry through assigned community outreach activities and at professional events such as NDIA, AAFS, ACS, etc., as requested. Provides subject matter expertise reach back support for customer missions, primarily but not limited to support for USSCOM.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, toxicology, forensic sciences or related field required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years hands-on experience in forensic analytical chemistry in a laboratory setting required.
Departmental Requirements

Must be eligible for Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy (RAMAN), Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR ) and basic colorimetric technology.
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance relating to ISO 17020 and ISO 17025.
  • Proficiency in establishing and enforcing laboratory safety protocols and standards.
  • Experience writing technical reports.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office Suite.
