Job Details:

Purpose

The Senior National Security Fellow for Instruction (Associate Director) plays a critical role in teaching, student mentorship, and program leadership at the Clements Center for National Security. This position requires academic expertise, professional experience in national security, and strong leadership skills to support the Center's mission in diplomacy, war, and intelligence studies. This role is designed for a highly experienced national security professional with a strong academic background, demonstrated success in program management, and a dedication to mentoring the next generation of national security professionals.

General Notes

Responsibilities

Teaching & Curriculum Development:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on diplomacy, war, and intelligence (2/2 teaching load)

  • Half of the teaching responsibilities will be assigned by Clements Center leadership; the remainder will be determined in collaboration with the affiliated academic unit

  • Develop and enhance instructional materials for Clements-sponsored degree programs

Program Supervision & Student Mentorship:

  • Oversee and expand student academic and military programs, including:

    • Undergraduate Certificate Program

    • Minor in International Business and National Security

    • Graduate Portfolio Program

    • Graduate Fellows Program

    • Undergraduate Fellows Program in Security Studies

  • Provide career mentorship and professional development guidance to students and young professionals pursuing careers in national security, policy, and related fields

Administrative & Strategic Coordination:

  • Assist in managing Center operations, including events, budget, and personnel

  • Supervise and lead large-scale programs while managing complex budgets

  • Serve as a key liaison between the Clements Center and corporate, governmental, military, and academic institutions

  • Represent the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director, and Associate Director in their absence

  • Support fundraising and development initiatives as needed

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D.

  • Experience instructing on war, diplomacy, or intelligence at the undergraduate or graduate level

  • Demonstrated commitment to student mentorship beyond the classroom, particularly in career development

  • Minimum 12 years' experience in national security, foreign affairs policy, and/or active military service

  • Substantial experience managing government or business operations, large staffs, and complex budgets

  • Commitment to travel 30-45 days per year, primarily during late spring and summer (May-August)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in History, Political Science, Security Studies, or a closely related field

  • Record of academic publication in national security, foreign policy, or related areas

  • Experience working in or closely with the U.S. Department of State, Department of Defense, or intelligence community

  • Experience working for the U.S. government in war zones

Working Conditions
  • This position is based in Austin, TX and is required to work on campus.

  • Summer travel (minimum of 30-45 days) required

  • Occasional evening and weekend commitments

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.

Salary Range

$160,000 +negotiable depending upon qualifications
