About the Job
Overview The University of Minnesota Libraries seeks an individual as a Project Archivist within the Charles Babbage Institute Archives to process the Maureen A. Nappi papers documenting her personal and professional accomplishments. In consultation with the curator, the Project Archivist will use independent judgment under limited supervision to process: arrange, describe, catalog, house, and make this significant digital artist's collection accessible for public discoverability and research, as well as coordinate a large-scale digitization effort for AV material associated with the collection. The position reports to the head of the Charles Babbage Institute Archives. This is a temporarily funded position for the Charles Babbage Institute Archives.This project has been financed with funds provided by the estate of Maureen A. Nappi. This position will require work to be done primarily on-site in Elmer L. Andersen Library. Salary Range:$25-$27.50/hour ($52,000-$57,200 annually) - depending on education/qualifications/experience Term: 12 months temporary position
Job Responsibilities: The Project Archivist will process the entirety of the collection and compile information including extent, material types, date ranges, locations, and preservation issues. The Project Archivist will work with considerable independence to organize and describe records following departmental specifications and professional standards. The Project Archivist will coordinate with the U of MN Libraries' Digital Libraries Services (DLS) a digitization effort focused on AV material within the Nappi collection as well as several other connected collections. The Project Archivist will seek opportunities to support the legacy of Maureen Nappi by publicizing the collection and project work in collaboration with the Curator of the Charles Babbage Institute Archives. Project completion will produce a comprehensive standards-based finding aid for physical and electronic media through the use of the archives information management tool ArchivesSpace and, potentially, promotional work associated with the collection and project (e.g. conference presentation or poster, publication, on-site exhibit, etc.).
Project management - 40%
- Survey the Maureen A. Nappi collection and types of media, become familiar with her
body of work and personal history/ethos. - Utilize the processing plan created by the Curator of the Charles Babbage Institute
Archives and develop a work plan with milestones for project completion. - Develop workflow, process, and tracking methods for digitization effort in collaboration
with Digital Libraries Services. In addition to managing the digitization of the Maureen A. Nappi collection, the Project Archivist will:
- Select and prioritize material to be digitized from other CBI collections.
- Manage digitization budget to achieve project goals.
- Determine additional resource needs if they arise during the project and communicate
them in a timely manner to the Curator of the Charles Babbage Institute Archives.
Archival Processing - 50%
- Organize and sequence material items physically and intellectually.
- Re-house materials as appropriate.
- Identity preservation issues.
- Describe the collection through analyzing, organizing, and recording details about the
collection, such as creator, title, location, dates, extent, and contents. - Describe series arrangement, scope and content, and conduct historical research as
needed. - Publish finding aid to aid in the discoverability of the archival materials using the
ArchivesSpace collection management tool. - Inventory and identify all electronic and AV media formats and types for digitization;
follow workflow to work with external vendors, ensure return of physical media, and integrate born digital and digitized material into University Libraries digital collections and greater Maureen A. Nappi papers finding aid.
Project Promotion & Reporting - 10%
- Provide regular updates on progress to Curator.
- Prepare statistical/tracking information and project narratives to include in reports to
Curator. - Identify local and national/international opportunities to highlight the project and
work/legacy of Maureen A. Nappi (e.g. conferences, publications, exhibitions, collaborative opportunities with other institutions, etc.)
Qualifications
Required:
- BA/BS plus at least two years of related experience; or a combination of related
education and work experience to equal six years. - Demonstrated understanding of archival professional standards and procedures.
- Previous archival processing experience.
- Previous project management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheets to track and analyze data.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and
cultures.
Preferred:
- Masters degree or graduate coursework in a related field.
- Some curatorial or managerial experience in a library or museum environment.

Program/Unit Description: The University of Minnesota Archives and Special Collections is made up of distinct collecting units holding rare books, manuscripts, organization records, personal papers, artwork, and artifacts on a diverse range of subjects, including children's literature; social work and welfare; immigration; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender studies; African American literature; architecture; performing arts; University of Minnesota history; history of computing; and other topics. Archives and Special Collections is open to the public. The collections are used by students, faculty, staff, and an international community of scholarly researchers.
