Laborer Job Description

Purpose of the position
This position performs general labor tasks of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature. UMM faculty and staff demonstrate an appreciation of cultural diversity and the ability to work effectively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experience.

Job duties

A. General Labor Percent Time: 45%

  • Load and unload trucks; incoming/outgoing freight.
  • Unload and deliver supplies to various departments and locations.
  • Pick up, haul, and/or sort garbage, recycling, composting and food refuse materials.
  • Move furniture, office equipment, tables, benches, chairs, and athletic equipment.
  • Operate various kinds of heavy equipment; Bobcat, dump truck, 60 foot ariel lift, forklift, etc.
  • Maintain vehicles and equipment-fueling, washing, repairs, etc.
  • General maintenance and repairs to buildings

B. Grounds Percent Time: 25%

  • Hoe, spade or water garden flower plots and beds.
  • Cut grass or mow lawns.
  • Shovel snow.
  • Operate various types of engine-driven equipment such as: lawn mowers, snow blowers, power rakes, small tractors, chain saw, pole saw, bucket lift, tree spade, chipper, etc.
  • Operate hand power lawn tools.
  • Light mechanical duties; daily maintenance of mowers, blade changing, etc.
  • Clean streets, catch basins.

C. Painting Percent Time: 25%

  • Paints interior and exterior portions of buildings; doors, windows, walls and ceilings.
  • Paints other structures: pipes, screens, doors, walls, ceilings, fixtures, floors and walks.
  • Move furniture and equipment.
  • Operate 60 foot ariel lift.
  • Prepare area; wash, remove wallpaper, sand, scrape, patch, etc.

D. Other Percent Time: 5%

  • Daily cleaning in an academic setting: floors, walls, windows, fixtures, waste, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Needs to be able to follow orders. Read, write and understand English.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 - $21.63 an hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
