Position Summary

Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Research Assistant Professor to join the Shimamura Lab.

The Research Assistant Professor will contribute to the advancement of cutting-edge research in lung cancer biology, therapeutics, and biomarker discovery. This position is expected to establish independent program in 2~3 years; it offers a unique opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources. A successful Research Assistant Professor candidate is highly motivated and experienced to perform excellent scientific research in a lung cancer research laboratory.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research on lung cancer, focusing on molecular mechanisms, therapeutic targets, and biomarker development.
  • Develop and pursue an independent research program, demonstrating competence to obtain extramural funding from federal, foundation, or other sources.
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and interpret results.
  • Prepare original, high-quality manuscripts for publication in competitive, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members and institutions to advance interdisciplinary research initiatives.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional and funding agency policies and guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in cancer biology, molecular biology, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in lung cancer research, as evidenced by a strong publication record. Experience with advanced molecular and cellular biology techniques. Proven ability to secure independent funding or significant contributions to grant-funded projects. Strong mentoring, leadership, and communication skills. Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment. Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with animal models of cancer and/or translational research.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics and data analysis related to cancer genomics or transcriptomics.
  • Knowledge of the drug development process, including preclinical evaluation. Previous experience securing DoD concept awards.
