Position title:

Salary range:
The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2024-25/july-2024-scales/t15.pdf. A reasonable estimate for full-time Lecturer positions is $68,247 - $106,327. Salary is commensurate with teaching experience.
Percent time:
Appointments are for the fall semester only, are typically part-time, and can range from 25 percent to 50 percent. Exact percent time depends on instructional contact hours and other assigned duties.
Anticipated start:
Appointments start on August 1, 2025 for service in the fall semester.

Applications are typically reviewed in April-May. Please note that applicants are considered for positions as needs arise, and the existence of this lecturer pool does not guarantee that a position will be available. The pool will remain in place through the advertised final closing date; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond the advertised final closing date must reapply when the new annual listing reopens.
Position duration:
Fall Semester (August 1 - December 31, 2025). Appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Position description

UC Berkeley Extension, the professional and continuing education division at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach undergraduate students for the Fall Program for First Semester (FPF).

The Fall Program for First Semester (FPF) is a small, collaborative learning community of first-year students who are entering their first semester at UC Berkeley's College of Letters and Sciences (L&S). We seek dynamic lecturers with a commitment to undergraduate first-year education to teach a wide range of courses that fulfill L&S degree requirements, including major prerequisites, college writing requirements, breadth requirements, and some electives.

The Fall Program for First Semester is committed to creating an inclusive environment, one that is supportive of all individuals, regardless of background. We are committed to building an excellent and diverse faculty, staff, and student body, and we welcome applicants whose experiences have prepared them to contribute to this commitment.

Every fall, courses are offered in-person in Berkeley, California (U.S.A.) during weekdays (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm). FPF also offers a limited amount of online instruction. General Duties

General duties may include (but are not limited to): teaching one or two sections of a lecture course (or courses). Some lecturers will also lead one or more weekly discussion and/or lab section(s) per course.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include: completing mandatory program orientation and other training programs within deadlines established by FPF and UC Berkeley; syllabus development; assignment development; lesson planning for class meetings; grading outside of the class; holding office hours to advise students; preparing course materials and additional resources to enhance the curriculum; and utilizing course support platforms as needed to facilitate student support and communication outside of class-time (e.g., Canvas/bCourses Learning Management System, Google Workspace tools, etc.).

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Advanced degree required.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online.
  • For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Preferred qualifications

  • Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree in course subject preferred.
  • Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching the course subject to first-year undergraduate students within the U.S.A.
  • Strong track record in developing and implementing new and experimental methods of delivering education and hands-on learning, and experience working with students from a range of disciplines.
  • Experience in creating syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology such as the campus' Learning Management System (Canvas) and Google Workspace tools (docs, sheets, slides, shared calendars, email, etc.).


Experience teaching entry-level lower division undergraduate courses in the following subject areas or their equivalents. Applicants may apply to teach courses in up to three (3) subject areas.
