About the opportunity

We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager - Tribal Liaison to support the Front Range Cultural Resources team. The Assistant Project Manager performs field and office tasks while supervising staff. The Assistant Project Manager - Tribal Liaison will primarily support projects that include a Tribal component, and the successful candidate will coordinate with SWCA's Indigenous Relations Team to facilitate trust and relationship building with Native Communities. This position is a regular, full-time, non-exempt, hourly and benefitted position that will primarily be based in our Broomfield or Fort Collins office, with fieldwork and overnight travel required.

What you will accomplish

  • Conducts background research for archaeological studies, including files and records searches through applicable State Historic Preservation Offices.
  • Ensures that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are ready for fieldwork.
  • Coordinates with clients, agency personnel, subconsultants, and Native American monitors, as needed, to arrange fieldwork and facilitate projects.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project Manager to ensure that a project's budgetary and timetable needs are met. Supports invoicing, project scoping, proposals, and budget tracking.
  • Work with staff to analyze proposed plans and projects involving Native American interests.
  • Directly supervises staff:
    • Interviewing, selecting and onboarding new hires
    • Providing direction, training, coaching, performance management and feedback to direct-line supervisees, as well as all field crew members while under deployment
    • Provide corrective actions with staff members, working with HR as needed on discipline and/or discharge
    • Complete field skills assessments on all crew members, providing feedback to ensure team members are learning and advancing skills while work is being performed on time and on budget
    • Complete performance reviews with regular status supervisees, ensuring employee engagement is high and career development plans are actioned
    • Participate with Project Managers, Team Leads and Program Director on overall talent management of the Cultural Resources Program including evaluating staffing levels, scheduling, retaining/continuing/exiting employees, assigning work, determining promotional/status opportunities, making compensation decisions, etc.
  • Supervises fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensures quality and completeness of data collected, including:
    • Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
    • Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
    • Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
    • Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field.
    • Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback.
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • In coordination with the project manager, organizes the report writing, production effort, and preparation of technical reports.
  • Maintains SWCA's high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Support SWCA to increase staff effectiveness and accountability when working in Indian Country.
  • Increase our ability to represent agency/client programs/projects and/or priorities to the tribal governments and native communities, with an embodied respect for tribal rights, beliefs, interests, and priorities to acquire more work with clients and Tribal Nations.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the archaeology of the western United States.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies and including at least six (6) months of demonstrated experience working with Native American communities.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Ability to be listed as a project archaeologist on the State of Colorado Archaeological Permit.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Availability to work extended field rotations (up to 12 days at a time) and travel accordingly is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle background screening, and have access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal and state preservation laws and regulations including, but not limited to the National Environmental Policy Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
  • Current understanding of tribal politics, culture, law, governance rules and structure, and the role of how relationships and values shape Native American views, values, and perspectives.
  • Experience leading archaeology crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience with computer-based programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Smartsheet, and others.
  • Experience collecting field data using iPADS and Esri software is preferred.

An employee in this Denver, CO - based position can expect an hourly wage of $28.88-$36.75/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
