DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, the employee will engage in semi-skilled tasks, either independently or by supporting a skilled worker, to carry out routine maintenance and construction activities within a State Park. Responsibilities include repairing buildings and facilities by utilizing tools from various trades such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and masonry. The role also involves operating and assisting in the maintenance, care, and cleaning of vehicles and equipment used throughout the park. General grounds maintenance is a key duty, which encompasses the use of small tractors with mounted mowers, zero-turn mowers, hand mowers, gas-powered weed eaters, and hand blowers. Tasks include cutting and splitting firewood, collecting litter and trash, cleaning park grills, sweeping paved areas, maintaining drains and culverts, as well as loading and moving materials. Additionally, the employee will be responsible for site preparation, seeding, establishing new turf areas, and planting and maintaining trees and shrubs. The role also requires painting or staining park buildings, signs, and gates, along with performing general housekeeping and building maintenance, which includes cleaning and supplying restrooms, offices, and other park facilities. Minor routine repairs, such as replacing light bulbs or tightening fixtures, are also part of the job. The employee must ensure the safe and proper use of all equipment, power tools, and hand tools, adhering to established safety protocols and utilizing appropriate protective gear. Attendance at mandatory safety meetings and training sessions is required. Furthermore, the employee will assist park visitors by providing information in a friendly and helpful manner, complete necessary documentation such as daily records, automotive mileage sheets, fuel dispensing records, and leave slips, and operate a two-way radio in accordance with proper procedures.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • This is a seasonal, full-time position with no healthcare benefits. There is not an option to buy into health care benefits. The season runs from approximately March 2025 until November 2025 at which time the employee will be placed on leave without pay. The employee will automatically be returned to employment approximately March 2026.
  • Shift hours and days vary due to operational need, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Weekends, holidays, and all shifts as needed at 37.5 hours per week
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience in laboring work including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance or construction; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
