Position Summary
The Banner Applications Solutions IT Manager is responsible for oversight of a team of business systems analysts, developers and business intelligence analysts in the Enterprise Applications Solutions unit focused on providing business analysis, process improvement, reporting, and ERP consulting services for the university's Enterprise Resource Planning ( ERP) system, Ellucian Banner and ERP related applications. The BAS Manager will lead unit to serve as Banner subject matter experts responsible for HR/Payroll, Financial, and Student systems support functions for the University. This includes supporting and optimizing critical university functions such as Employee benefits enrollment, payroll cycles, financial year end close, student registration, graduation periods, day to day support, training, as well as leading strategic initiatives, enterprise projects/programs, and business enhancements.
The BAS Manager (IT Manager I) is responsible for managing, tracking and assessing progress on assigned initiatives for the business analysis and reporting team as well as providing hands on systems support. The Banner Applications Solutions IT Manager will partner closely with leaders across the university, to ensure delivery of business solutions for departmental, or enterprise-wide projects and initiatives. The position will also drive process and workflow improvements and automation throughout the university using tools such as Visions Maps, Ethos, and Jaggaer, etc.

  • Consult with departments, technicians, and other analysts to provide solutions and resolve technical problems
  • Use industry standards and best practices for analyzing, designing, implementing and improving business process and systems.
  • Create and maintain documentation for analysis, design, development, testing, and implementation activities.
  • Test code, applications, systems per requirements and specifications, using industry best practice and department standards.
  • Develop end user documentation such as training materials, standard operating procedures.
  • Develop and maintain standard tools, processes, training for Banner across all modules
  • Provide second- and third-level support for staff members who are the principal subject-matter experts
  • Lead and direct the activities of Banner Applications Solutions Unit assigned to projects and oversee additional project team members such as vendors and consultants toward successful completion
  • Provide input to strategic planning with emphasis on integration of new technologies as appropriate
  • Keep abreast of Banner features, functionality, end of life timeframes, best practices and apply as relevant to the appropriate lines of business.
  • Configure and administer ERP modules, related applications and business intelligence tools to support business needs such as Banner Administrative Pages, DegreeWorks, Evisions Maps, eProcurement, etc.
  • Use industry standards and best practices for analyzing, designing, and developing reports, dashboards, and data integrations using tools such as WebFOCUS, PowerBI, and Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Identify and recommend opportunities to invest in infrastructure, resources, and applications to enhance data warehouse capabilities in support of maturing data analytics intelligence and forecasting with data scientists and business intelligence staff that support the analytical needs of the campus and departments to include training for end users.
  • The manager is responsible for the overall supervision and professional growth and development of the employees within the unit.
  • Conduct performance reviews and create work plans which contribute to the Strategic Initiatives of the University
  • Provide guidance and direction to the business systems analyst, developers and reporting staff in business analysis, design, improvement, report design and development, application administration, formalized testing and support
  • Coordinate unit activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of BAS technical staff.
  • Evaluate and verify employee performance through the review of completed work assignments, work techniques, and appropriate metrics.
  • Identify staff development and training needs and ensures that training is obtained.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance, and feedback of team in order to help them meet future goals and career growth
  • Actively participate in Talent Management of Banner Applications Solutions unit

Department Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment, or equivalent combination of training and experience from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Experience with Banner HR/Finance /Payroll and/or Student module (or comparable ERP System)
  • Business analysis, programming and reporting
  • Experienced in managing projects using Project Management methodologies
  • Management experience
  • Excellent communicator and interpersonal skills


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
* Minimum of 3-5 years of Banner HR/Payroll and/or Student experience (or comparable ERP System) in a business systems analyst role.
* Demonstrated experience with project management, business process methodologies, data integration, or data extraction and reporting tools
* Experience with PeopleAdmin, Evisions Maps, and UNC Data Marts is a plus
* Experience with collaboration tools, business analysis techniques, or online training technologies is a plus
* Knowledge of one or more Ellucian Banner modules or applications is a plus.
