The Grayling Generating Station plant is a 38 MW biomass-fueled renewable energy power plant that produces electricity. The fuel consists primarily of bark and sawdust from local lumber mills and the non-marketable biomass from lumbering operations.The power produced supports the health of the forests, mitigates greenhouse gases (is "carbon neutral"), conserves landfill space and supports the electric grid in northern Michigan. The electric output is sold pursuant to a long-term power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy Company. This facility can produce enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes. Commercial operation began in 1992.

The Lead Fuel Supply Operator is responsible for equipment operation and record keeping duties on a variety of complex systemssuch as: wood fuel handling, ash handling, and heavy equipment within established procedures. The lead fuel supply operator willmonitor and oversee the work for lower level fuel supply operators for safety and quality adherence. They will also train and mentornew operators and be responsible for various housekeeping and maintenance tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Operate fuel and/or ash handling equipment which may include wheel loaders, track driven dozers and various machinery in a safeand efficient manner. Train and mentor lower level operators on the operation of and safety details of equipment and assist incoordinating schedules
  • Maintain strict adherence to Plant Safety, Fuel, Ash Handling and Administrative programs and procedures. Monitors the operation ofsuch plant equipment and systems as well as the work of subordinate operators and takes appropriate action to ensure they areoperated safely, in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
  • Will assign control systems including fuel handling, ash handling, and related components in a safe and efficient manner and directsthe work assigned Plant Management and Lead Control Room Operato
  • Provides equipment cleaning, filter changes, and adjustments. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. Maintains a safe workenvironment through job planning, housekeeping, and adherence to plant safety rules and procedures, and identification andcorrection of hazards
  • Assists the Plant Maintenance Department in performing preventative and corrective maintenance as assigned. Maintains assignedcontrol systems to ensure proper operations. Performs routine equipment maintenance, safety checks, inspections and adjustments, asrequired
  • Responds to alarms in a timely manner; operates necessary equipment to effectively respond to critical situations. Identifies andcorrects problems; reports problems requiring further action to the Lead Control Room Operator
  • Performs maintenance activities during plant outages and minor maintenance on shift as required
  • Receive, unload, mix, stage, and stack/store fuel in a manner consistent with established fuel handling procedures. Reclaim fuel asnecessary to support overall plant operation
  • Other non-essential duties as assigned or may be necessary


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:



  • Be able to use standard computer software programs such as spreadsheets, word processors, databases and other commonprograms
  • Have a thorough knowledge of Large Mobile Heavy Equipment (e.g., CAT D8 Dozers, CAT 938 loaders) operation and establishedprocedures
  • Previous experience operating and/or maintaining heavy equipment, including a bulldozer (e.g., construction, farming equipment).
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and take direction from others
  • Thorough knowledge of all fuel and ash handling systems and understanding of heavy equipment, plant procedures andmeasurement standards
  • Ethics and standards of conduct
  • Ability to qualify and effectively perform duties of Plant Operator when needed


Position Requirements:



  • Associate Degree in plant operations and maintenance, or related field required
  • 7+ years of experience in operating and/or maintaining heavy equipment (e.g., construction, farming equipment, bulldozer) required


Working Conditions:



  • Indoor and outdoor work including in hazardous power plant environments including steam, hot water and computer work
  • Field and Plant Operations
