Job Title: Software Engineer V | Exempt

SUMMARY
The USCC J9 DCO effort key activities will modernize the DCO mission space to Defend the Nation against malicious cyber actors. The DCO effort will span multiple disciplines (e.g. Data Science, Systems Engineering, Analytics, Development) with a focus on building capabilities that enable knowledge driven operations and information sharing in the Cybersecurity domain to support DODIN, NC3, and the greater WOG. The DCO effort will spearhead the collection, analysis, and defense of emerging threats through a revolutionary and integrated ecosystem, a common operating picture, analytics and a communications hub, and persistent joint operations; protect systems/networks through forward-looking technologies and threat intelligence.
Provides technical/management leadership on major tasks or technology assignments. Establishes goals and plans that meet project objectives. Has domain and expert technical knowledge. Directs and controls activities for a client, having overall responsibility for financial management, methods, and staffing to ensure that technical requirements are met. Interactions involve client negotiations and interfacing with senior management. Decision-making and domain knowledge may have a critical impact on overall project implementation. May supervise others.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Key Skills and Experience:
* Data Processing and Engineering:
* Proficient in data manipulation and transformation, especially with large datasets.
* Experience ingesting data from various sources like Excel files, CSVs, databases, system logs, etc.
* Ability to clean and preprocess data, removing unnecessary data elements.
* Familiarity with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
* OpenSearch & Elastic search:
* Experience working with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for indexing, searching, and querying large datasets.
* Ability to optimize searches and manage clusters.
* Knowledge of the Elasticsearch query DSL, indexing strategies, and performance tuning.
* Visualization in Kibana:
* Proficient in creating visualizations and dashboards in Kibana.
* Understanding of how to use Kibana for data exploration, trend analysis, and reporting.
* Visualization Experience:
* Experience in creating visualizations in a UI Design Framework, like React.js with Material-UI
* Understanding basic UI/UX principles for a positive user interface experience to convey data in meaningful ways to analysts and decision-makers
* Programming/Automation:
* Strong proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, or other relevant languages for data processing and UI development.
* Experience in writing automation scripts for repetitive tasks (e.g., ingesting data, cleaning, etc.).
* Experience with Software/Data Science Concepts:
* Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and common data science techniques.
* Experience with data science tools like Pandas, NumPy, or similar libraries for data manipulation.
* Experience with Cloud/Distributed Systems:
* Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.) is a plus, especially if the data pipeline is running in the cloud.
* Understanding distributed systems principles.
* Experience with Idea to MVP Generation:
* Experience in taking ideas and proofs of concepts to a minimal viable product.
* Experience is developing rapid prototypes to meet critical mission needs.
* Desired Experience:
* 15+ years of experience working in data engineering or software development with a focus on data processing and user interface development.
* Exposure to Elasticsearch/OpenSearch is a plus, but it's not a dealbreaker if they have strong data engineering skills in other areas.
* Exposure to a UI framework like React.js is a must.
* Experience with rapid prototype creation and deployment is a must.
* Comfortable working under tight deadlines as necessary.
* Possible Tech Stack:
* Programming Languages: Python, Java, or Go.
* Data Engineering Tools: Apache Kafka, Airflow (for orchestration), Spark (if needed for larger datasets).
* OpenSearch/Elasticsearch: Indexing, querying, and optimizing.
* Visualization Tools: Kibana, Grafana (for more advanced visualizations), React.js .
* Cloud: AWS (ElasticSearch Service), or Azure (if using cloud infrastructure).
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Background, and Years of Experience
* 15+ years of experience working in data engineering or software development with a focus on data processing and user interface development.
Qualifications - Degree from an accredited college or university in System Engineering or related discipline and one of the following: - 15+ years of experience with a Masters Degree - 18+ years of experience with a Bachelor's degree - 20+ years of experience with Associate's Degree or HS Diploma
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions
* Contractor site with 0%-10% travel possible. Possible off-hours work to support releases and outages. General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing and walking for up to 10% of the time. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are not hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.
Strength Demands
* Light - 20 lbs. Maximum lifting with frequent lift/carry up to 10 lbs. A job is light if less lifting is involved but significant walking/standing is done or if done mostly sitting but requires push/pull on arm or leg controls.
Physical Requirements
* Stand or Sit; Walk; Repetitive Motion; Use Hands / Fingers to Handle or Feel; Stoop, Kneel, Crouch, or Crawl; See; Push or Pull; Climb (stairs, ladders) or Balance (ascend / descend, work atop, traverse).
