The Bio Tech organizes, maintains, and prepares laboratory materials and equipment used in laboratory experiments associated with Biology courses. This position is targeted with Biology course setups which include general biology, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology. This position reports directly to the Instructional Services Coordinator Sr. position of the Biological Science department, and receives daily direction and instruction from the Lab Tech Sr. This Lab Tech position supports faculty, staff, and students in multiple course instruction and laboratory experiments. Essential Functions 50% - prepare and setup materials, reagents, chemicals, cultures, microbial media, supplies and equipment used for instruction in various Biology labs. Clean laboratory and properly dispose of lab materials, chemicals, cultures, supplies, equipment and waste products; maintain a safe lab environment by adhering to and implementing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) program and associated standard operating procedures (SOP) and protocols, other applicable laboratory SOP and protocols, and other laboratory equipment manuals. 40% - maintain laboratory equipment and conduct minor basic repairs, perform preventative maintenance activities; maintain inventory of materials and supplies; care for plants, animals, and preserved specimens as needed; interact with faculty and staff to optimize laboratory operations; provide work directions to part-time laboratory technicians. 10% - receive deliveries of supplies, and equipment; other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of laboratory experience such as maintaining equipment, facility space, supplies or other resources used for laboratory purposes in area of assignment. OR An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered. Desired Qualifications 1. Associate's degree or higher from an accredited institution in a Science field. 2. Experience in a science laboratory such as academic (particularly in a teaching lab) or industrial setting. 3. Experience using computer programs such as Google Workspace or other computer software programs applicable to labs. 4. Experience in care and maintenance of organisms including plants, insects, microbes, etc. 5. Experience with implementing safe practices in a laboratory setting, and/or lab safety training. 6. College credits or other experience in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and/or Microbiology. Special Working Conditions Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to laboratory hazards including physical, chemical, and biological. Physical hazards include but not limited to equipment mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, noise, lighting, varying temperatures [heat/cold], ergonomics, material handling etc.; chemical hazards include but not limited atmospheric fumes, odors, dusts, gases, vapors, etc.; biological hazards include human bodily bloods and other fluids, organisms (invertebrates, small vertebrates, and plants), microbial cultures. Moderate exposure to work environment conditions such as interruptive people. May require lifting objects up to 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation. May be required to drive to and work at multiple campus locations and work outdoors.
