Job Overview

The Accountant I is responsible for the timely and accurate accounting and reporting of sales and gross margin across all retail operating divisions. The Accountant I ensures all accounting is in strict compliance with GAAP and supports both internal and external audit requests. Additionally, the role involves performing routine journal entries and balancing procedures, identifying and investigating variances, and implementing solutions. The Accountant I also supports the People Leader in team projects, system or process testing, and monitoring processes for accuracy. This position contributes to the design, implementation, and analysis of company strategic initiatives, handles related ad hoc requests, and fulfills any tax-related inquiries or requests. The Accountant I plays an integral role in maintaining financial integrity and operational efficiency across the organization.

What You Will Do



  • Record weekly entries and reports related to gross margin, troubleshoot financial systems, and analyze data for sales and gross margin performance.
  • Develop and execute SQL queries using tools such as Google BigQuery to extract data from multiple data sources, create financial analyses, and maintain reporting processes as they evolve.
  • Assist in the monthly closing of gross margin components for financial statements, communicate exceptions to business units, and follow up on responses. Investigate out-of-balance situations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, analyze and report variances, and create consolidated reports as needed. Ensure all reconciliations are completed accurately and in compliance with accounting standards.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation, schedules, and support for financial analysis.
  • Handle any tax-related inquiries or requests from internal teams, external parties, or regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws and accurate documentation.
  • Participate in the design, testing, and implementation of financial systems, assist with system rollouts, and provide user support as necessary.
  • Provide key insights and analytics related to company strategic initiatives, helping to drive revenue growth and improve financial performance.
  • Actively contribute to the identification and resolution of process inefficiencies and assist in implementing better practices for team efficiencies.
  • Work cross-functionally with various departments to ensure smooth operations and accurate financial reporting. Support the team with ad hoc requests and projects as needed.
  • Ensure regular, dependable attendance and punctuality to meet department and company needs.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.

Skills You Will Need

GAAP and Accounting Principles: Strong understanding of GAAP and basic accounting principles, ensuring compliance and accuracy in financial reporting.

Financial Analysis and Reporting: Expertise in financial analysis, reporting, and reconciliation processes, with the ability to identify discrepancies and resolve complex financial issues.

SQL and Data Management: Proficiency in developing and executing SQL queries using tools such as Google BigQuery to extract and analyze data from multiple sources.

Advanced Excel Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, enabling complex data analysis, reporting, and financial modeling.

Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information in a clear and concise manner.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively across teams, including marketing, merchandising, and operations, to ensure accurate financial reporting and alignment with business goals.

Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address financial discrepancies, with the ability to think critically in resolving issues.

Independent and Initiative-Driven: Ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high performance.

Strategic and Creative Thinking: Ability to think strategically, creatively, and technically to address business challenges and capitalize on opportunities.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 1-2 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
