Job Summary and Purpose:

The Environmental Monitoring Technician I will perform microbiological testing involving environmental monitoring, water, and other production utilities to help ensure quality production. The technician will ensure products are tested in a manner consistent with Standard Operating Procedures and in compliance with regulations according to 9CFR.

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

  • Perform routine daily, weekly, and monthly environmental monitoring testing on processes, utilities, and personnel

  • Sample purified water system, clean steam, and other utilities for subsequent analysis

  • Perform assigned sampling tasks carefully and on schedule according to standard operating procedure and supervisor instruction

  • Clearly document sample collection activities on controlled records

  • Gather and input data for trending purposes

  • Gram Stain and/or further identify bacteria when contaminants are detected

  • Communicate results that are out of specification or out of trend to management

Technical / Functional Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of Microbiology

  • Must have great aseptic technique

  • Basic skills with databases and word processing programs

Qualifications:

Education -Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Veterinary Science or related field required; 4+ years of relevant work experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.

Work Experience - Experience in a Quality Control Lab preferred; entry level would be considered.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write legibly and communicate in English

  • Visual inspection

  • Ability to perform repetitive motions and stand for extended periods of time

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Working Conditions:

  • Handling hazardous materials or other chemicals if necessary
